I’m talking about comparing myself to “successful” people. People who have achieved things. Things that I want to achieve. They’re the kind of person I aspire to be like. Seemingly, they have it all: money, success, fame, happiness.

Do You Give Up Too Easily? How To Power Through

Do You Give Up Too Easily? How To Power Through | Life @ Work | Scoop.it
The truth is that many of us don't apply ourselves enough to achieve the positive life changes to which we aspire. Why? Why is it that we so often fail to successfully make the changes we really want?

Over the years, I've lectured to tens of thousands of people on the subject of improving their quality of life. One of the main points I make is that an essential element of having more of the life you want is dedicating at least some time each day to clearing and quieting your mind.

After describing the practical, physiological, emotional, mental, and of course spiritual benefits of taking even just a few minutes a day to meditate or relax deeply, it's clear that most people are genuinely inspired to do it. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of people ever act on their inspiration. But these would-be meditators are not alone.

Simpler Thinking: 5 Powerful Habits That Work For Me

Simpler Thinking: 5 Powerful Habits That Work For Me | Life @ Work | Scoop.it

”Chi Wen Tzu always thought three times before taking action. Twice would have been quite enough.” Confucius

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.” Eckhart Tolle

One of my biggest problems used to be that I thought too much. I overthought any little problem until it became a bigger and scarier thing in my mind. I overthought positive things until they didn’t seem to be that positive anymore. I overanalyzed and deconstructed things until the happiness that comes from just being in a moment and enjoying it fell apart.

This locked me into analysis paralysis. Little action was taken. Opportunities were rarely used. Life stood still and felt confining. And when I took action I tended to overanalyze things. That lead to more nervousness, second-guessing and me performing worse when I was doing whatever I was doing.

12 Most Intriguing Success, Business, and Life Strategies I’ve Learned From Dogs

12 Most Intriguing Success, Business, and Life Strategies I’ve Learned From Dogs | Life @ Work | Scoop.it

“The dog has seldom been successful in pulling man up to its level of sagacity, but man has frequently dragged a dog down to his.” – James Thurber

Whether it began 15,000 years ago when dogs scavenged for refuse at campsites of Paleolithic man, at some point in this long relationship with humans, dogs decided that being near us was an advantage.

Clearly, most of us felt the same way.

What is rather amusing, though, is that we spend a great deal of time and money training our dogs when I suspect we could learn far more from our dogs than they could ever learn from us.

Wisdom – a short guide

Wisdom – a short guide | Life @ Work | Scoop.it

It’s one of the grandest and oddest words out there, so lofty, it doesn’t sound like something one could ever consciously strive to be – unlike say, being cultured, or kind. Others could perhaps compliment you on being it, but it wouldn’t be something you could yourself ever announce you had become.

20 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Every Sunday

20 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Every Sunday | Life @ Work | Scoop.it

At the cusp of new beginnings many of us take time to reflect on our lives by looking back over the past and ahead into the future.  We ponder the successes, failures and standout events that are slowly scripting our life’s story.  This process of self reflection helps maintain a conscious awareness of where we’ve been and where we intend to go.  It is pertinent to the organization and preservation of our dreams, goals and desires.

Barb Jemmott's insight:

When I first read this post, it struck me as a great way to prep for the upcoming week while reflecting on recent events. Each point has value, whether taken individually or collectively. This statement pretty much sums up  the overall benefits of taking 30 minutes a week to practice the suggestions.

"Take 30 minutes every Sunday and give yourself the gift of self reflection.  It has worked wonders for me, and I am confident it will do the same for you."

“The man who doesn’t read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.”

“Name the greatest of all inventors. Accident.”

“Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.”

Back in 2009 I wrote an article with some great quotes from Mark Twain – lecturer, satirist, humorist and author of classic books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – and it became a favorite for me and many readers.

A sequel to Mark Twain’s Top 9 Tips for Living a Kick-Ass Life has been in my ideas folder for some time. But today I have completed it.

How to Be Less Stressed in Everyday Life

How to Be Less Stressed in Everyday Life | Life @ Work | Scoop.it

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in, forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day, you shall begin it well and serenely…” Ralph Waldo Emerson

To me one of the most interesting things about improving life and growing is to make the regular day even better. Reaching your goals, having really special or awesome days and learning to handle bad times and slumps are of course important but many days in life are spent in-between that...
