Amiigo: The exercise tracker that identifies exercises

Amiigo: The exercise tracker that identifies exercises | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it
Sandra Lyn's insight:

This is a prototype (funded by Indiegogo) that aims to identify which type of exercise the wearer is doing and track data related to it. It's true that a lot of the exercise-based life tracking technologies are 'unitaskers'; they only do one thing. I'm not honestly convinced of the newness of this product though. I have a tracker on my iPhone that knows when I'm cycling, driving, running, or walking. See the post on "Moves" for more information.

Evgeny Morozov: 'We are abandoning all the checks and balances'

Evgeny Morozov: 'We are abandoning all the checks and balances' | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it
Technology writer Evgeny Morozov talks to Ian Tucker about the politics of technology, why newspapers are great – and his personal means of escape
Sandra Lyn's insight:

"With self-tracking we end up optimising our behaviour within the existing constraints rather than changing the constraints to begin with" (Morozov).

A critical view of self-tracking, TED talks, learning to code, and other things. This guy seems to be a bit of a 'pooh pooer', but he reminds us that technology can be a bit of a 'bandwagon'.

Web 4.0: The Ultra-Intelligent Electronic Agent is Coming | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it

Ah, je suis has-been avec mon Web 3.0...

Baptiste Vannesson's comment, March 29, 2013 6:33 PM
Baptiste Vannesson's curator insight, March 29, 2013 6:45 PM

Snooping Through Salman Rushdie's Computer

Snooping Through Salman Rushdie's Computer | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it
The author's digital drafts and personal e-mails are now available for all to see at the Emory University Library
Sandra Lyn's insight:

'Born-digital curation'. Salman Rushdie has allowed for the public display of his personal computers. His files are not only visible, but viewable through emulating software that captures the look and feel of the software he was using at the time. Emory University has aquired "Rushdie's early computers--a mid-90s desktop, three laptops, and an external hard drive with over 40,000 files including Rushdie's first foray into email in the early 1990s".

Nicholas Felton Unveils His Latest Annual Report

Nicholas Felton Unveils His Latest Annual Report | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it
Today, you probably know Nicholas Felton best for his most widely seen work, Facebook’s Timeline. But since 2005, he’s been working on a cult-favorite project all his own, the annual Feltron Report.
Sandra Lyn's insight:

Felton not only tracks the data of his life--cities visited, books read, beverages consumed--every year he produces a beautiful report translating his data into infographics. It's his 'life's annual report', and it really makes the collecting of life data seem worthwhile.

Moves for iPhone

Moves for iPhone | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it
Let your iPhone tell you how much you move.
Sandra Lyn's insight:

This is a neat app that I've been using for about a month. It does what it says: it tracks all the movements I make (as long as I have the phone with me). The tracking is very accurate, and I keep the phone in my purse. The major downside of this app is battery usage though. I have to charge my phone every night, something they discuss upfront on their webpage. The app goes beyond tracking steps or km travelled and plots everything on a map, with location data powered by foursquare. It's fun to see a map of everywhere you've travelled in a day, especially when visiting other cities. I recommend this app.

Wow. A tiny device that plugs into the iPhone and measures Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen Level, Respiratory Rate and Heart Rate Variability. Beautifully designed HTML5 website too. I'm definitely interested in getting one of these for myself, but the ramifications for this type of health technology seem amazing. Imagine a similar device that tests blood sugar for diabetics?

Everything We Know About What Data Brokers Know About You

Everything We Know About What Data Brokers Know About You | Life Tracking in the Era of Big Data | Scoop.it
The companies that sell information about how much money you make — and whether you’re pregnant, divorced, or trying to lose weight — are facing new scrutiny.
Sandra Lyn's insight:

A lot of information about the concept of 'data brokers'. The article is clearly American, but I'm sure a lot of the same information (if not the same brokers) apply to Canada. There's a surprising statistic about the main data broker company, Acxiom, having information on over 500 million people, including every US citizen. Not sure how this could be completely true, but wow wow wow.
