L’Oreal Goes After 3D Printed Human Skin to Test Beauty Products | life style of the future | Scoop.it
Long pressured to end animal testing in cosmetics, L’Oreal has been in the cultured skin business since the 80s. But it remains a relatively slow and expensive process. Earlier this month they announced a partnership with 3D bioprinting firm Organovo—3D printed skin, it's thought, may offer a more scalable solution.

Tesla announces the Model 3: At half the price of the Model S, Tesla wants to take EVs mainstream | life style of the future | Scoop.it

Tesla’s Elon Musk has revealed his company’s plans to take on compact executive cars, such as the BMW 3-series, with the Tesla Model 3. The all-electric Model 3 (which was originally going to be called the Model E) will be around 20% smaller than the Model S, and will have a shorter range of around 200 miles — but it will have ‘strong performance’ like the Model S and start at just $35,000 (the Model S starts at around $70,000). http://www.peepstalks.com/tesla-announces-the-model-3-at-half-the-price-of-the-model-s-tesla-wants-to-take-evs-mainstream/

World-first regeneration of a living organ

World-first regeneration of a living organ | life style of the future | Scoop.it

For the first time, the team has successfully regenerated a living organ in mice by manipulating DNA.

The organ in question was the thymus, which is located next to the heart and is an integral part of the immune system. In humans, it achieves most of its growth in early life, continuing to then grow slowly until puberty when it slowly begins to shrink for the remainder of a person's life. It's deterioration with age leaves older people with greater susceptibility to infections, such as flu.

3D bioprinting of stem cell structures could combat osteoarthritis | life style of the future | Scoop.it

As yet, nobody has discovered a more effective barrier than human cartilage itself, so there’s no shortage of research going into the creation of new cartilage to replace or repair worn out joints.

One promising stream involves the idea of using 3D printing technology to deposit stem cells directly into damaged areas of cartilage so it can grow back as healthy tissue.

In theory, the SpaceX Falcon 9 v1.1 booster can be reused more than three-dozen times.

That's because the rocket's LOX/Kerosene Merlin 1D engine -- nine of which power its first stage -- have a cycle of 40, according to Stella Guillen, SpaceX director of business development.

"It's not obviously the entire system or the entire stage," she said during a space conference in Paris last month. “We don't know how many times we can fly the first stage. But the engines have a cycle of 40...

First transfusions of "manufactured" blood planned for 2016

First transfusions of "manufactured" blood planned for 2016 | life style of the future | Scoop.it

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107 million blood donations are collected globally every year.

Nonetheless, blood is often in short supply – particularly in developing nations.

Despite new safeguards, there's also still the risk of incompatibility, or of infections being transmitted from donors to recipients.

Charitable organization the Wellcome Trust hopes to address these problems, by developing the ability to manufacture blood outside of the body. Last week, it announced that test subjects should begin receiving transfusions of blood made with lab-grown red blood cells by late 2016.

The molecular secrets behind resveratrol’s health benefits | KurzweilAI

The molecular secrets behind resveratrol’s health benefits | KurzweilAI | life style of the future | Scoop.it

Resveratrol has been much in the news as the component of grapes and red wine associated with reducing “bad cholesterol,” heart disease and some types of cancer. Also found in blueberries, cranberries, mulberries, peanuts and pistachios, resveratrol is associated with beneficial health effects in aging, inflammation and metabolism.

Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have identified one of the molecular pathways that resveratrol uses to achieve its beneficial action: it controls the body’s inflammatory response as a binding partner with the estrogen receptor.
