Being Leader-ish: When You’re Not Quite a Leader | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

"ish."


This is the word we use when something is stuck between being and not being. Between is and is not. For example, we might say, “that shirt is red-ish.” Or, “I’m feeling sick-ish.” And sometimes, “the weather is a bit warm-ish.”


Describing things as ish is handy, because it helps us avoid committing when we’re not quite ready. And when it is used in the course of regular conversation, we tend to accept this half-way point as okay, and we carry on. We typically do not challenge convenient ish-isms.


But when is being ish not okay? What about in leadership? Is being leader-ish okay, not okay, or maybe okay-ish?

But true character-based leadership emerges through discomfort. Ours, and others. It requires focusing our attention on how we can make others shine. Making mindful judgment calls. Getting things done through others, and winning their hearts and minds in the process. Handling people as unique individuals. Looking beyond our positions to the behaviors and choices that are best for our employees, for the team, for the organization, and its customer.

There are three skills you need to be financially successful: making money, keeping money, growing money. James Altucher is mostly only good at making money.


"I’ve had several instances where I’ve started a business, sold it, made a lot of money, and then basically lost everything I made, whether it was $50 million or $5 million or whatever," he tells Fast Company. "I always have a tendency to lose everything I made."


There are some simple rules, like drink coffee first thing in the morning and 20 minutes before you write so that it "sets your brain on fire, makes you go to the bathroom, cleans your body out before you set your heart on fire." Then, there’s his 30% rule, which basically says that everyone should cut or rewrite at least 30% of their masterpiece after they think they’ve finished it.

If you're like many of my clients prior to them seeing me, you might have a hard time getting started with projects and completing tasks. Maybe you do everything but what you need to be doing. Perhaps you watch TV instead of cleaning your house. You socialize instead of finishing a work project, or surf the Internet instead of writing that business plan you've been meaning to do for the longest time.

You essentially avoid that which you deem to be uncomfortable. It’s an adaptive response to stress, fear, and anxiety. The problem with this tactic is, by putting off an important task, it ultimately leads to more stress, greater fear, more anxiety — and of course not completing the task.

This procrastination can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, and depression — all of which can kill motivation and creativity and perpetuate the unproductive cycle. Poor time management, feeling overwhelmed, unrealistic standards, or just plain laziness are a few possible reasons for procrastination.
