The Learning Factor's insight:
Thirty years ago, researcher Virginia Schein coined the term ‘think manager think male’ to describe the perception that stereotypically male characteristics – like dominance, decisiveness and assertiveness – are more compatible with management than stereotypically female characteristics.
This association has been used to explain why women are under-represented in the higher echelons of management and why the exact same behavior is rated as less favorable when it comes from a female manager than when it comes from a man (he’s assertive, she’s pushy).
