There’s an opportunity cost to everything. Too often, we forget to value our time and attention. Most of the time, my company deals with leaders within an organisation, many of whom are very talented and could potentially do themselves what we’re doing for them. However, is it worth their time to try to establish the relationships and maintain the processes? That’s a question to ask yourself about anything that someone else could do in your place.

The next time you’re offered the chance to shift your schedule to avoid rush-hour traffic, or to work from home while the kids are on school break, know this: You may be penalized for saying yes.


In a forthcoming paper, researchers from University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management say there are career consequences for using flexible work arrangements, such as flexible schedules, telecommuting, job shares and compressed work weeks, but they vary depending on why a manager thinks the employee needs the accommodation.


It’s all about perception, say Lisa Leslie and Colleen Flaherty Manchester, two of the study’s authors and both assistant professors at Carlson’s Center for Human Resources and Labor Studies.
