5 Habits Of People Who Always Get What They Want

5 Habits Of People Who Always Get What They Want | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

You’ve been offered a job but the salary wasn’t the number you were hoping to hear. Or you’ve received a bid on a project and it’s under what you think it’s worth. Instead of accepting the deal in disappointment or firing back with another amount, sports agent Molly Fletcher says it’s time to start a conversation.

Unfortunately, most of the world doesn’t ask for what it wants. A recent survey by Salary.com found that just 44% of people negotiate for a better salary.

And companies are happy when you don’t negotiate, says Fletcher: “Few offer their best price out of the gate,” she says.

The Confidence Gap

The Confidence Gap | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

For years, we women have kept our heads down and played by the rules. We’ve been certain that with enough hard work, our natural talents would be recognized and rewarded.

Our competence has never been more obvious. Those who closely follow society’s shifting values see the world moving in a female direction.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Evidence shows that women are less self-assured than men - and that to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. Here's why, and what to do about it.

Is Self-Doubt Holding You Back? 5 Ways To Build Confidence And Banish Doubt

Is Self-Doubt Holding You Back? 5 Ways To Build Confidence And Banish Doubt | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

The problem with self-doubt is that the fear it creates stops us from living the lives we most want and changing the things we don’t.  How?  Fear keeps us living small and stuck in jobs that don’t fulfill us but feel safe.  But is there really anything safe about living a life where you feel disengaged, disillusioned or desperate to be doing something else? of course not. The truth is that who you are is not your doubts. The key to banishing them isn’t to wish them away, but to take action in their presence.

It’s easy to mislead ourselves into thinking that if we just had the success we wanted, then we’d never doubt ourselves again and ooze the confidence we see in others.  But it actually works in reverse.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

If you find yourself plagued by self-doubt, you’re not alone. In fact, one study of managers by the European Institute for Leadership and Management revealed that 50% of female managers and 31% of male managers admitted to experiencing self-doubt.

Why Some People Are Genetically Wired To Be More Confident | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Is confidence encoded in our genes?

Yes — at least in part. That's the belief of neuropsychologist Steve Suomi of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), who is studying the personalities of monkeys, and it's also the belief of every one of the dozen or more scientists that were interviewed

Belief is contagious. It wins supporters. It’s self-fulfilling. As Harvard professor Rosebeth Moss Kanter shows in her book Confidence, the belief you can win creates momentum which improves your chances of winning.

So what do you do when you don’t believe?

Over the past four weeks, I’ve studies books and articles, interviewed entrepreneurs and experts, then assembled it all for you in a simple framework with which you can systematically attack whatever belief is holding you down. Give me 20 minutes. This works.
