Peer Coaching as a Tool for Culture Change

Peer Coaching as a Tool for Culture Change | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it
How does an incoming CEO make systemic changes in an established company when its employees have become demoralized or fearful? I’m thinking of a storied manufacturing firm that only recently emerged from a decade of turmoil and drift. An independent analysis concluded that an overly ambitious expansion effort in the mid-2000s had resulted in the company launching projects it lacked the resources to deliver. Managers and engineers, reluctant to bring bad news to bosses who had advocated for expansion, let troubled projects fester until problems became acute.
Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

The simple but effective practice of peer coaching can help organisational culture change.

Stress Isn't a Threat, It's a Signal to Change

Stress Isn't a Threat, It's a Signal to Change | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Is stress impairing your performance at work and compromising your relationships? Changing the way you think about stress can help you turn stress into an ally and use it to improve mental agility and work performance; a report in the Journal of Experimental Psychology showed that physiological and cognitive benefits result from thinking of stress as “functional and adaptive” rather than a signifier of “threat.”

In my executive coaching practice, I help clients transform their attitude about stress. There are many ways to do this, and the method needs to be individually tailored to each client’s unique situation. Here are three ways that clients in my practice have reappraised their stress and used it to propel positive changes:

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Turning stress to your advantage is no easy task. It requires mental discipline to pause when you’re in the grip of stress and to reframe it as potentially useful.

What It Takes To Be A Great Technical Leader

What It Takes To Be A Great Technical Leader | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Most successful projects have a single engineer responsible for driving the project forward while ensuring that strong technical decisions are made with confidence. Typically, that person is referred to as a Tech Lead.

They often don’t manage people, but instead coach them to do their best work.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

6 Things Managers Could Stand To Learn From Coaches

6 Things Managers Could Stand To Learn From Coaches | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

You must help your employee create the shifts in their beliefs and actions that will result in the achievement of desired results. Coaching is a partnership between the coach and the employee, where the main goal is to help the employee develop and contribute to the business.

A Philosophy of Coaching

Great managers have the ability to drive uncommonly successful results for their organization by coaching their people. Coaching is based on the premise that, with help, people can ignite their own potential and achieve or even accelerate their results by discovering solutions for themselves. Coaches help people identify their individual aspirations for change, desired results, and solutions and then match those goals with the needs of the business.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

In order to be a great manager, you need to be an effective coach with the ability to ask powerful questions, listen actively, and offer observations.

How to Be a Better Coach, According to Neuroscience

How to Be a Better Coach, According to Neuroscience | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Sure, running a business is about maximizing the bottom line, but few entrepreneurs care only about the dollars and cents. For most, going into work every day is also about making the world a slightly better place and helping your team get better at what they do.

In other words, most business owners aspire to be not just managers but coaches.

How do you learn to be a great coach?

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

A new study finds that great coaches don't focus on finding and fixing their team's weaknesses. They do this instead.

Rather than focussing on what isn't working take a more positive approach and focus on where people want to get to.  The results are more rewarding all round.

Leadership Coaching Takes Hold

Leadership Coaching Takes Hold | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

China's rapid development has left it with an acute problem: a lack of skilled, experienced leaders. Both foreign- and locally owned businesses are finding that ready-for-deployment upper-echelon managers are in short supply.

A growing number of businesses are seeking to address the issue through leadership coaching, a relatively new phenomenon in the country.
