How to heal our smartphone-addled, overworked brains - Fortune Management | Life Balance | Scoop.it
The biggest casualty of everyone being so connected is productivity. No one is getting much done at the office. A few ways you can maintain a healthy brain at work.
Clare Wildman's insight:

I'm very lucky as I'm self employed.  I have the freedom to make my own choices about when technology can drive me and when I can put it on hold and really focus or take some time out.  How many times though do you hear of people who can't? How many times have you overheard a call in the middle of the shops which is obviously work?

Work-Life Balance is Overrated: 3 Tips to Stop Feeling Guilty

Work-Life Balance is Overrated: 3 Tips to Stop Feeling Guilty | Life Balance | Scoop.it
Tweet We’ve all heard the advice about the importance of creating and maintaining work-life balance.
Clare Wildman's insight:

A slightly misleading title I thought and it seemed as if this was going to be all about semantics but...some great points here about living to your values.  Yes coaches and time management experts talk about life-work balance - if they are using the concepts well though they won't be dictating what that balance should be but will instead be encouraging you to consider what balance means to you.  They'll also be supporting you to investigate just how that balance can change over time and to be confident in following the path that you have chosen.

Fathers actually now report higher levels of “work-life balance” conflict than mothers do.
Clare Wildman's insight:

Interesting research findings here.

I find it interesting that there seems to be a need for an 'excuse' to want to work less than 60 hours a week....surely these excessively long hours are not healthy or productive for anyone: male, female, father, mother, single.....

Embrace Work-Life Imbalance

Embrace Work-Life Imbalance | Life Balance | Scoop.it
The problem is not your inability to switch off, but to switch on.
Clare Wildman's insight:

Interesting and to a large extent I agree with many of the points raised here.  It seems to me that the problem with work-life balance is the way that different people are defining it.

Here it is all about the time spent on 'work' versus the time spent on 'life' but the focus is all on the 'work' side and whether or not it feels like work.

However much you enjoy what you do for a living there is still some balance needed.  You still have family, friends and hobbies to spend time on/with.  You still need to carry out the more basic and mundane tasks in life: cleaning, shopping, cooking, putting the rubbish out.

To me life balance is not about the black and white view of work v life but about making sure that you are getting ALL that you want in life in the balance that works for you.  At the same time remembering that you don't live in isolataion and that there are others to consider as well.
