If you just watch the game, a conservative estimate of the running time of the Super Bowl is at least three and a half hours. Add in the pre-game and post-game analysis and the entire event could top six hours. What could you be doing with that time? Reading a book is one option. Continue reading →

7 Brutally Honest Job Rejection Letters

7 Brutally Honest Job Rejection Letters | License to Read | Scoop.it
Rejection is always difficult to deal with, but some are better than others. We've compiled some of the worst job rejection letters we've ever seen.
Enid Baines's insight:

Found poetry in the greatest rejection letter ever.

(To Gertrude Stein)

Dear Madam,

I am only one,

  only one,

  only one.

Only one being, one at the same time.

Not two, not three,

  only one.

Only one life to live,

only sixty minutes in one hour.

Only one pair of eyes.

Only one brain.

Only one being.

Being only one, having only one pair of eyes, having only one time, having only one life, I cannot read your M.S. three or four times.

Not even one time.

Only one look, only one look is enough.

Hardly one copy would sell here.

Hardly one.

Hardly one.

Many thanks.

I am returning the M.S. by registered post.

Only one M.S. by one post.

Sincerely yours,

Arthur Fifield

The Great Fitzgerald - The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Great Fitzgerald - The Chronicle of Higher Education | License to Read | Scoop.it

The talking heads on BBC Radio’s culture programs tended to return wistfully to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, and I heard one critic refer to its final passage as a quintessential example of truly superb English prose.

Enid Baines's insight:

Great literary analysis.

Writing takes skill and passion and poetry--not exactly teachable.

I wholeheartedly agree that Fitzgerald's novel is truly superb English prose. I only add that reading it is a poetic experience.

And the movie was perfect. Anyone who says differently has never lived a crowded life of desperation in a fast city or longed for something utterly unattainable.

J.K. Rowling & E.L. James Lead Most Abandoned Books List - GalleyCat

J.K. Rowling & E.L. James Lead Most Abandoned Books List - GalleyCat | License to Read | Scoop.it

The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling topped that list, followed by Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James.

Enid Baines's insight:

The timing on this is perfect. Just two days ago I abandoned "The Casual Vacancy" after 300+ pages (and a month of picking up/putting down) and read a summary of the rest on Wikipedia. I just couldn't waste any more effort on it.

As a side note, I also abandoned "Fifty Shades" but only after 50 pages, (and I didn't bother to look up a summary).

I also abandoned "Eat, Pray, Love" at about the halfway mark. Same reasons as given here: whiny and self-obsessed narrator. Watched the movie just to see Bali again.

On the other hand, Dan Brown's "Inferno" was impossible to put down, in spite of some major eye-rolling lucky coincidences and a bit of cheese. No worse than lucky breaks in Hollywood films...
