ArchivesInfo: Libraries, Innovation, and Our 21st Century Role

ArchivesInfo: Libraries, Innovation, and Our 21st Century Role | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

Many years ago, I began serving as a judge at the New Hampshire State competition for the Young Inventors Program. It is a wonderful program that encourages inventiveness in young people in grades K-8. It is a perfect place for a curious librarian/archivist to spend some time.
Designed for the classroom and aimed at encouraging K-8 students to "think outside of the box," the Young Inventors Program is structured and developed to encourage all students to participate, including those who may not "fit the mold" for traditional sciences.

Finding a new calling: encouraging inventiveness

This year, I decided to sponsor an award. A Library and Information Services award seemed like a much needed focus area for encouraging invention.

Library spaces for a digital era must cater to many audiences | Harvard Magazine

Library spaces for a digital era must cater to many audiences | Harvard Magazine | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

WHAT SHOULD A HOME FOR OLD BOOKS look like in a digital age? The Harvard Library has grappled with this issue (see “Gutenberg 2.0”). Now, the University of Oxford has unveiled its attempt to answer that question in the form of the Weston Library, its new facility for reading, teaching, exhibiting, and digitizing the Bodleian Library system’s rare materials and special collections. The £80-million, five-year construction project transforms the interior of the building once known as the “New Bodleian” (which served mainly as a book depository with some reading rooms and office space attached) into a somewhat eclectic mix of spaces deemed vital parts of a twenty-first-century rare books library: a cavernous exhibition hall, a lecture theater, digital-ready classrooms, conservation and imaging workshops, office space for visiting scholars, a café, and (of course) stacks and reading rooms—all in six aboveground stories, with three more staff-only stories of underground stacks.

Is the Library Really Dead? - Timeline.com

Is the Library Really Dead? - Timeline.com | Librarysoul | Scoop.it
Libraries are in rough shape these days. Long treasured as bastions of knowledge, they’re being assailed on two fronts: funding cuts and technological disruption. Why borrow a book when you’ve got the Internet and a Kindle? But rumors of the library’s demise are greatly exaggerated. The challenges that libraries face have spurred their radical reinvention as makerspaces and digital archives built to last thousands of years. The libraries of the future will preserve and transmit knowledge as alway

Libraries report outlines maintenance crisis | Capital New York

Libraries report outlines maintenance crisis | Capital New York | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

Report details the libraries' state of disrepair.

The city's library presidents will make their case to the City Council this morning for increased funding and a boost in capital dollar spending to repair what they call a “maintenance crisis” across the city’s 207 libraries.

The presidents of the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Public Library and the Queens Library will release a report detailing the libraries' state of disrepair at a press conference on the steps of City Hall ahead of the Council’s Committee on Libraries preliminary budget hearing.

In their report, titled "Long Overdue NYC’s $1 Billion Library Fine," the library presidents say the system is in dire need of capital upgrades that range from fixing cooling and heating problems to repairing broken elevators and malfunctioning windows.

Shock at Library of Birmingham new opening times: Just SIX hours at weekends

Shock at Library of Birmingham new opening times: Just SIX hours at weekends | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

£189 million flagship has been hit by council cuts.

THE Library of Birmingham will open for just SIX hours every weekend after the upshot of savage cuts was revealed.

The £189 million building will no longer open on Sundays after April 19 when cost-cutting measures are brought in to reduce its hours from 73 a week to just 40.

The landmark building will open from 11am until 5pm on Saturdays and its doors will be locked for a full 42 hours straight every week before people are let in again at 11am on Mondays.

Steve McCabe, the Labour General Election candidate in Selly Oak, said it was a ridiculous situation which needed addressing.

He said: “I think it is a real disaster to have a brand new major building like this and have the hours cut.
