Libraries reach out to rural day care homes to help improve quality

Libraries reach out to rural day care homes to help improve quality | Librarysoul | Scoop.it
The program is part of a statewide effort focused on early education.

Children typically come to the library to be read to, but Christina Roseli of the Placerville Library in California’s Gold Country is reversing that dynamic. Instead of the children going to the library, she is going to them, in a one-of-a-kind program in California.

Several days a month, Roseli, an early childhood literacy specialist, drives miles from the library to rural areas of the sprawling county, where she sings and reads to children in family child care homes, which are small day care centers where the adult residents of the homes are the care providers.

Homeless library patrons must park their gear at the door

Homeless library patrons must park their gear at the door | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

City librarian Misty Jones had a thorny problem for city attorney Jan Goldsmith: how much gear can homeless readers take in from the cold?

“Some library patrons have asked to bring all of their belongings, including four-foot-tall rolling carts containing boxes and bedrolls, into the Mission Valley Branch Library computer lab and the San Ysidro Branch Library,” according to Goldsmith’s July 16 legal memo to Jones on the subject. “The patrons indicated that they have disabilities and keep their medicine in the carts. The Once and Future Publishing Library — Council on Library and Information Resources

The Once and Future Publishing Library — Council on Library and Information Resources | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

The report explores the revitalization of library publishing and its possible future, and examines elements that influence the success and sustainability of library publishing initiatives.

The authors trace the history of library publishing and factors that have transformed the publishing landscape, and describe several significant library-press collaborations forged over the past two decades. Authors include results of a survey they conducted to better understand how current library publishing initiatives are supported financially. They conclude with a series of observations about the range of publishing initiatives in American academic libraries.
The report was funded by a grant from The Goodall Family Charitable Foundation.
