Libraries 'must emulate coffee shops'

Libraries 'must emulate coffee shops' | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

Public libraries in England are "at a crossroads" and must adapt if they are to survive, an independent report into the future of the service has said.

It suggests they need to emulate coffee shops, by offering free wifi, sofas, toilets and hot drinks.

It also calls for a library taskforce and a national digital library network to boost library standards in England.

Report author William Sieghart said libraries were a "vital lifeline" for people, but are in a state of crisis.

Libraries are gateways to knowledge

Libraries are gateways to knowledge | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

ELMORE – Today’s school libraries are not what they were when today’s parents were children. Back then, libraries were nothing more than rooms filled floor to ceiling with books. But advancements in technology have made those rooms gateways to the world’s knowledge, and the librarians that run them know the way through those gates.

But maybe not for long.

Jean Schultz, library media specialist for Woodmore schools, has worked hard to obtain the training she needs to have the knowledge to provide the best technological resources available to the district’s students.

Online donations buoy Ferguson library

Online donations buoy Ferguson library | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

In the unrest following the grand jury decision in the case of Michael Brown, several groups tried to kick in the big glass doors of the Ferguson Public Library.

They failed, and now the space has become a sanctuary.

On a desk inside the library, a homemade sign reads "During difficult times, the library is a quiet oasis."

While many businesses in Ferguson have closed their doors, the library - two blocks from the police station and centrally located among the protests - is open. On Tuesday when schools were closed, children participated in crafts and story time programmes and ate lunch. On Wednesday, reporters worked in the quiet space, while business owners took part in archive-preservation programmes.

Libraries could play key role in managing research data - Data - Research Information

Libraries could play key role in managing research data - Data - Research Information | Librarysoul | Scoop.it

Sharing and long-term preservation of research data are increasingly important to the research process, strengthening the process of science and maximising a funder’s return on research investment. While some fields have embraced the sharing of data more fully than others, the sharing of research data is of growing interest across all scientific disciplines.

However, we are still transitioning from a document-centric view of science to a data-centric view, and the infrastructure is not yet in place for the seamless sharing and reuse of scientific data. A growing number of increasingly sophisticated instruments and sensors mean that the scientific data available for sharing is growing rapidly, but there is a lot of work involved in extracting that data from researchers’ hard drives and ensuring that it is accessible in the long term.
