Few buildings in America resonate in the collective imagination as powerfully as the New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street.Yet the trustees of the New York Public Library—I write as one of them but only in my capacity as a private individual—have decided to rearrange a great deal of that sacred space.

The ground under all libraries is shifting. From financial uncertainties to the challenges of guaranteeing digital access for all, the country's largest circulating library has no choice but to change. We must also preserve our position as one of the world's great research libraries. The New York Public Library must make some important choices to ensure our strengths. To help us make these choices, we recently launched a website and public engagement process to solicit your suggestions and concerns about our plans. We know that change is not easy. And we know that we cannot do this without input from our users.

by Lisa Chau: Heather Backman "She discusses here how technology such as e-books affected the library: In one sense, e-books have changed very little about what libraries do or how we do it; they just allow us to deliver a basic library service in a different medium. Some people have said that e-books are “killing” the printed book or that they spell the end of libraries, but that hasn’t been my experience. To my mind, the e-book is not “killing” the printed book, just supplementing it. We are still buying physical books in large quantities and I expect that we will continue to do so for a long time. I would go so far as to say that I doubt the physical book will ever completely go away. Even if it does, libraries are more about information-sharing than about lending physical items; handling e-books may mean changes in some of our procedures but I don’t think that libraries will cease to exist when the e-book predominates."

'The announcement that Arts Council England is set to hold (yet another) consultation on the future of libraries got me thinking about the trials and tribulations that campaigners are going through. Sisyphus and Cassandra in particular sprung to mind as their particular curses seem to sum up the frustrations campaigners must feel.

Many systems end up with more books and longer hours. Why then, does library privatization make so many so uncomfortable?

A battle is raging over a controversial plan to renovate the iconic New York Public Library on 42nd Street, move two million books to New Jersey, and make the building more friendly to tourists and visitors—with a café to boot.Author Jon Reiner says this is the death of the library’s soul, but the problem is nationwide, as he discovered traveling across America to visit libraries where few people actually read books. Reiner’s memoir, out in paperback on June 5, is The Man Who Couldn’t Eat.

The change has come more slowly to books than it came to music or to business correspondence, but by now it feels inevitable. The digital era is upon us.

Over the past couple of weeks as a part of the 30 Days of Innovation series I’ve written about the importance of embracing failure and the need to breed a culture of innovation in libraries. Last week I had some people ask me what happens when you understand the value of failure and innovative culture in the workplace, but your colleagues and administration do not?

Internet adoption among U.S. adults increased rapidly from the mid-90s to about 2005. Since then, though, the number of adult Internet users has remained almost stable at around 78%.

With online bookstores and e-lending services sprouting up at every point of the online sphere, newcomer Bilbary looks set to cause ripples in the water, particularly if recent reports are anything to go by. With a mission statement that pledges to offer “all the eBooks in the world” to its subscribers, and with an eBook rental service, cloud reader and app service in the pipeline, Bilbary already looks set to achieve in the literary world what iTunes has accomplished in the music world.
