Harvard Library to faculty: we're going broke unless you go open access - Boing Boing

Harvard Library to faculty: we're going broke unless you go open access - Boing Boing | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Henry sez, "Harvard Library's Faculty Advisory Council is telling faculty that it's financially 'untenable' for the university to keep on paying extortionate access fees for academic journals. It's suggesting that faculty make their research publicly available, switch to publishing in open access journals and consider resigning from the boards of journals that don't allow open access."

If Publishers Can't Cover Their Costs With $10 Ebooks, Then They Deserve To Go Out Of Business

If Publishers Can't Cover Their Costs With $10 Ebooks, Then They Deserve To Go Out Of Business | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Years ago, someone who understood these things taught me why cost-based pricing will always get you into trouble. If you start from the overall pricing, including overhead and other fixed costs, then you're not basing the price on what the consumer values -- and, more importantly, you're taking away your own incentives to become more efficient and decrease costs. Instead, you're just "baking them in." But the most important reason not to base pricing on overhead costs is that your competitors won't do that, and they'll under cut your price and then you're in serious trouble.

The Age of Participation

The Age of Participation | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

How can we grab the public’s interest despite the one-click availability of information? How can we compete with the seductive voice of Siri?

Building collections and seeking ways to engage the public and promote curiosity challenge us all. The era of participatory culture demands that cultural and information professionals play an active, visible role in our communities.

Signage is one of the most important tools for wayfinding. If there is one truism about library signage, it is that most of it is not very good. Understanding the mistakes that lead to bad signage is the first step on the road to creating good ones.

Author Of Controversial Children's Book Speaks Out | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

A children's book that will be released next week is stirring up controversy among parents. It's called "Vegan is Love," and according to the publisher, is a young readers' introduction "to veganism as a lifestyle of compassion and action." The details, however, including images of animals behind bars in crowded cages and graphic passages about animal testing are being called unsuitable for children –- the book is intended for kids as young as 6-years-old.

The most expensive copyright insurance policy in Canadian history

The most expensive copyright insurance policy in Canadian history | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Last week, the Association of Universities and Colleges Canada signed up for one of the most expensive copyright insurance policies in Canadian history. The policy comes in the form of a controversial model copyright licensing agreement with Access Copyright, a copyright collective that licenses copying and distribution of copyrighted works such as books, journals, and other texts. Should AUCC members sign the agreement they will pay $26 per full time student per year for the right to copy works from the Access Copyright repertoire.
