"The library where I work has recently been working on a large project converting from the Dewey Decimal system of classification to the Library of Congress. It’s been taking us a while, but we’ve finally moved on to the last phase: our large collection of media, including DVDs, video games, audiobooks, etc.
Disney’s Pocahontas was assigned a main entry of E99.P85. For those who don’t have LoC call numbers memorized (which I’m assuming is most people), E is the broad heading for American History. Numbers in the range around E90 are specifically American Indian History, and E99 is for History of Tribal Groups. The P85 specifies further the tribe the book is about.
Pocahontas was being classified as a historically accurate documentary."
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has launched Frankenstein: The Afterlife of Shelley’s Circle, the second edition of its free “Biblion: The Boundless Library” app for iPads. The app was developed in an effort to give more people access to the library’s research collections, and encourage them to explore those collections in unique ways. The first edition, released in May 2011 focused on NYPL’s extensive collection of materials from the 1939-40 World’s Fair, and won Apple’s Education App of the Year award.

I have the Game of Thrones theme song stuck in my head. It might just stay lodged there for an entire year, until Season 3 starts. It will definitely keep playing until I hold a finished copy of Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones in my hands, the book that the Chronicle team has been developing in complete secrecy for the past year.
Sony announced yesterday that their ebookstore was now available to browse and buy ebooks via any web browser. This is a stellar achievement for Sony, and it comes a mere 6 years after they launched the Reader Store.
This week saw the American release of Francesca Segal’s debut novel, The Innocents, a superb modern-day retelling of The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton’s classic novel of upper class scandal. Now, adaptation, cross-pollination and flat out stealing are nothing new in the literary world — the trend of adaptation and re-adaptation is rampant...we’re so excited by The Innocents that we decided to put together an entire reading list of wonderful contemporary novels based on works of classic literature, so you can indulge in the present and the past in equal measure.
Researchers at the Joan Ganz Cooney Center in New York worked with 32 pairs of parents and their three to six-year-old children for the small study, Print Books vs Ebooks, which gave each family a print book and either a basic ebook or an enhanced ebook version of the same title. Enhanced ebooks were found to distract children from the story, and their bells and whistles prevented children from remembering as many narrative details.
