Librarian pays lip service to reading

Librarian pays lip service to reading | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Everyone knows the fairy tale of a frog turning into a prince when it’s kissed. But what happens when someone kisses a bat? It didn’t turn into a prince, but it did put a smile on kids’ faces. On Tuesday, Betty Collins, children’s librarian for Musser Public Library, kissed an Egyptian Fruitbat as a reward to kids who took part in a summer reading program.

Demystifying the Library with Game-Based Mobile Learning

Demystifying the Library with Game-Based Mobile Learning | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

10:00-35:00 [minutes]: Teams disperse into the library to discover the answers to their 15 questions. Some questions require text-based answers; others prompt students to submit a photo. We ask them to introduce themselves to and take a photo with a librarian, to find a book in the stacks and take a photo of it as evidence, and to find the collection of circulating DVD’s, among other things. Each answer is submitted as an Evernote note. While students are exploring the library, a librarian monitors the teams’ Evernote accounts (which have been shared with our master account) and scoring their answers using a GoogleDocs spreadsheet. Meanwhile, another library staff member copies student photos into a PowerPoint document to run while students return at the end of the hunt.

“We aren’t looking to create a new OverDrive or anything like that at this point,” explained CULC/CBUC Executive Director Jefferson Gilbert. “We’re looking to create a proof-of-concept so that we can do a pilot with some materials that are currently not available, and agree on some licensing terms for that material. Hopefully, we’re going to demonstrate to [publishers] that this is a good model for them to be involved with, for a number of reasons.”

For those of us more practiced in reading than physical prowess, where can we obtain that “let’s do this” feeling of great achievement? In books, of course. Stretch out your fingers, adjust your reading lamp, put the Rocky theme on repeat, and psych your self up for the ultimate reading challenge.

Why writing an app is different to writing a children's picture book

Why writing an app is different to writing a children's picture book | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Moira Butterfield and Nosy Crow keen to see authors and publishers collaborating more on book-apps.

"We already have apps in which picture books are read out loud and pictures change when children touch the screen. But I believe there could be more innovative computer/picture book mixes out there to discover, and I want publishers to call on us authors for ideas, not just on computer whizzes. I think we should get into the mix and offer our creativity," [Butterfield] wrote.

Patricia Sweeney loves contests. She loves them almost as much as she loves books, shelves of books, rows of inviting titles. Sweeney is a sucker for, and an adept at, Book Spine Poetry. In the Tacoma library version, players arrange book titles into poems, stack them and take a picture of the free verse they make.
