Scanning Library Cards on Smartphones

Scanning Library Cards on Smartphones | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Something I really like about smartphones are apps like CardStar and Key Ring - they let you input the numbers from all the club and rewards cards from your keychain and display the barcode on your phone. Patrons also use these apps for their library card numbers, and some libraries aren't sure how to handle the library-card-on-smartphone situation. (Feb 2011)

eBooks & eBook Apps to Dominate Tablet Downloads by 2016

eBooks & eBook Apps to Dominate Tablet Downloads by 2016 | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

We’re just at the beginning of what’s going to be a long period of increasing sales of apps, with media tablet owners expected to average more than 31 downloads per year per tablet. The biggest growth in readers will be among seniors (ages 60+) and children (ages 1-9). “The magic of media tablets for seniors and children is the touch screen interface. It’s so intuitive,” adds Mark Beccue, senior analyst. “These demographic groups will rely heavily on downloaded apps over web surfing on their media tablets.”

The Social Side of Reading | American Libraries Magazine

The Social Side of Reading | American Libraries Magazine | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

If you think about it, reading has always had a social component. If it didn’t, there wouldn’t be book groups around the world that take place at libraries and in people’s homes. People love to talk about what they read. What’s different now is that discussion can happen during the reading experience, inside the book, and not just outside of that experience, outside of the book. It happens via social reading apps.

Gamifying Your Library

Gamifying Your Library | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Librarian gamers have long worked to bring gamers into the library through such offerings as “game nights” at the library. But what if you could make using the library a game in itself? This is the premise behind a product produced by the likely-named outfit Running in the Halls. Dubbed Librarygame™, it comes in two “flavors”, “Orangetree” for public libraries and “Lemontree” for academic.

How To Introduce an Author

How To Introduce an Author | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Author introductions, in my opinion, are about courtesy. Should a beloved, Pulitzer Prize-winning author have to hear the president of Northwestern’s Jewish students’ society call him Michael Sha-BONE eight times in two minutes? No. Because he flew across the country to speak for 50 minutes in your overheated auditorium and you have the internet. A good author introduction shows the author that you’re excited to be a partner in promoting their work and that you value the role their career plays on the literary stage, all while being informative and – lord have mercy – brief.
