News and Analysis: Here Comes Amazon’s All-You-Can Read E-Book Subscription Service

News and Analysis: Here Comes Amazon’s All-You-Can Read E-Book Subscription Service | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Amazon already offers one free book a month to all Kindle users who are also Amazon Prime subscribers via their Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL) service. It began in November 2011 with about 5,000 titles available and as of January 2014 offers access to more than 500,000 ebooks.

Laura Hazard-Owens points out in her article published today, “Amazon is testing “Kindle Unlimited,” an ebook subscription service for $9.99/month”, that the folks from Seattle appear to be preparing for a roll-out of a new service. The report includes a look at some of the content KOLL makes available today from all of the Harry Potter titles to a lot of self-published books.

The DeLaMare Library at the University of Nevada, Reno has been named to Make Magazine's list of "Most Interesting Makerspaces in America."

The magazine's current issue credits the DeLaMare's unique tools for its inclusion on the list — tools that include "lockpicking kits, 3D scanning and printing and Arduino prototyping.

Other locations in Make's top 10 are at Yale University, Silicon Valley and Portland, Ore.

This could be Ireland’s library of the future – but why the controversy?

This could be Ireland’s library of the future – but why the controversy? | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

The Lexicon is costing €36.6m to build. In an interesting move, the 6,520m2 building – which will be the central library for the county of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown – will be called the Dlr Lexicon, which reflects the fact that it offers more than a library.

It’s also intended to be a cultural centre, with a café (the tenant is yet to be decided on), a gallery, a small auditorium space, crafts spaces, a local history library, 100 parking spaces and a children’s library.

It’s hoped that this mix of facilities will attract more than 50,000 people to Dun Laoghaire every year.

Rather than being detached from the rest of the town, it is supposed to draw people into the centre of Dun Laoghaire, offering them a space to explore and enjoy before making their way into the town.

nickcarman's curator insight, July 20, 4:13 PM

Public libraries have to prove they are delivering value to their customers to justify the money spent on them.  There is nothing different about this library to any other library in the world.  Staff & management will need to be on their game.

Doug Mirams's curator insight, July 21, 5:23 AM

Planned library includes a Scandinavian-inspired "taster" area, "unobtrusive and relaxed", described by thejournal.ie
where  "people sitting around reading newspapers, flicking through a recommended paperback, or popping in for 10 minutes respite on a busy day".

Edmonton Public Library Celebrates Library of the Year Honors

Edmonton Public Library Celebrates Library of the Year Honors | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

When the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) in Alberta, Canada was named the Gale/Library Journal 2014 Library of the Year, the staff knew they'd made history, becoming the first library outside of the United States to take home that honor. Turns out, Edmontonians know how to party, and they sent us some images from the celebration, which featured party favors, foam fingers, and of course, story time for the kids. Because no matter how big the honor you have to accept, nothing gets in the way of story time.

According to both 2006 and 2009 studies published by Raymond Mar, a psychologist at York University in Canada, and Keith Oatley, a professor of cognitive psychology at the University of Toronto, those who read fiction are capable of the most empathy and “theory of mind,” which is the ability to hold opinions, beliefs and interests apart from their own.
