U Michigan Libraries Open Nap Stations

U Michigan Libraries Open Nap Stations | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Right now, the nap stations consist of inexpensive vinyl cots and pillows housed in disposable paper pillowcases, the same kind you would see in a hospital setting. While it’s not exactly the lap of luxury, those amenities make for better options than landing face down on a textbook or keyboard. The biggest change for students may be the addition of temporary lockers where they can store their personal belongings. That extra degree of security can help people sleep easier, knowing their jackets and bookbags will be on lockdown until they get their second wind.

What We Loved Best in 2014 | What We’re Reading

What We Loved Best in 2014 | What We’re Reading | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

As 2014 wound down and everybody in the world composed their “best-of” lists, I consulted my fabulous roster of WWR contributors about the best book they read in the past year. It didn’t have to be a 2014 title, though for most of the gang, it was; a lot of the people just couldn’t choose (though several contributors spoke reverently but off the record about an LJ Best Book of 2014, David Nicholls’s Us). And then there are we happy few, those of us who buckled down and made a choice. With that done, we’re ready for the tomes of 2015. Bring ‘em on!

The 10 best books of 2014, according to everyone

The 10 best books of 2014, according to everyone | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

A book is an investment, both of time and money. And while everyone — from blogging bibliophiles to The New York Times — is entitled to their opinion, the number of best-of lists out there can make it hard to determine what books to read. We developed a metric to determine the best of the best. Here's what you should read in the new year, if you haven't already.

What Does It Mean That James Bond's In the Public Domain In Canada? | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

On January 1st, 2015, the works of Ian Fleming entered the public domain in a number of countries. That means that the character of James Bond is no longer copyrighted in those countries, just like Sherlock Holmes has been for a while. But it doesn't mean that it's suddenly open season on that character.

Vendors have begun addressing many...issues with portable clients designed specifically for tablets. SirsiDynix debuted MobileCirc in 2013. Available to Symphony and Horizon users as an iOS, Android, or browser-based web app, MobileCirc is designed to work with portable Bluetooth scanners and includes features that enable libraries to check out, renew, and place holds on items remotely. MobileCirc can also be used to sign up new patrons and issue library cards by scanning a driver’s license barcode. And for staff doing work in the stacks, the app offers reports and real-time lists of books and other items for weeding, inventory, and other tasks.
