Can-Lit's Sexy Side

Can-Lit's Sexy Side | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

It's Valentine's Day, and we've been all about the bookish love over here at 49thShelf with our Feel the Love Valentine's Day Contest (whose deadline is February 14th at midnight). But we also wanted to take a moment to highlight the racier elements of romance, that sexier side of Can-Lit. Because it's true, (surely you knew?), that Can-Lit has a sexy side. We've put together this list of Canada's sexiest books with input from some of the nation's best readers. If you notice any glaring omissions, let us know in the comments below and we'll add them to the list.

A soundtrack can make or break a movie in the same way that acting, a script, or the production style can. What I love about movie scores is that they tell a story in a different way...

New York City Putting Libraries In Homeless Shelters To Make Sure That Homeless Children Have Access To Books

New York City Putting Libraries In Homeless Shelters To Make Sure That Homeless Children Have Access To Books | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

It’s a well established fact that reading is good for kids, but lots of kids don’t have consistent access to books outside of school. That’s why it’s fantastic that New York City will soon be adding thousands of books to homeless shelters to help benefit children and families.

With twenty shelter libraries, NYC estimates it will benefit more than four thousand of the estimated twenty-five thousand children who sleep with their families every night in the city's homeless shelters.

Putting children's libraries in NYC homeless shelters will help the approximately 25,000 children who sleep in NYC shelters every night and their families!

Picture Books Parents Will Actually Want to Read Over and Over | Kirkus | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

You know what it's like. It's bedtime, and your tot reaches for a book you'd rather drink lye than read again. Here is a baker's dozen of antidotes, for babies up through early-elementary children. There are urban idylls and country adventures, wordless wonders and books that practically read themselves aloud, funny flights of fancy and explorations of history and science. Between their art and their texts, each one richly repays multiple visits.

Augmented Reality Coloring Pages

Augmented Reality Coloring Pages | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it
After reading this article in the New York Times yesterday I started thinking about one of my favorite coloring apps for children.  No matter how old or young you are coloring requires a combination of skills that can be applied in various situations.  Combining coloring with augmented reality is an easy way to introduce this exciting technology to students.  The colAR Mix app (available for iOS and Android devices) is a super fun choice with plenty of free options.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, April 17, 10:18 PM

The lesson here for higher ed is about developing familiarity with new technologies.  The possibilities for AR across all disciplines are immense, but often students (and teachers) find it difficult to initially connect with a use that allows them to start to conceive of how it can be used.  Something as ubiquitous as colouring is used in many contexts (think of the Anatomy colouring book used by many health practitioners to learn about systems and connections).

Set Your Phasers to Stunned: 2015 Hugo Nominations Stir Controversy

Set Your Phasers to Stunned: 2015 Hugo Nominations Stir Controversy | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

The April 4 announcement of this year's Hugo Awards shortlist generated a firestorm of controversy on Twitter and sf websites; at issue is the politicization of what should have been a selection process based on literary merit.

Beyond the Best Novel category, most of the final choices in the other categories (Best Novella, Best Novelette, Best Short Stories, Best Related Work) came from two fan block-voting campaigns, one called Sad Puppies organized by sf authors Brad R. Torgersen and Larry Correia. and the Rabid Puppies slate headed by fantasy writer. Vox Day (real name Theodore Beale),.

Gaming & Libraries: A Canadian Perspective

Gaming & Libraries: A Canadian Perspective | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

The Canadian perspective on games and libraries comes to us from Christine F. Smith, ILN Country Ambassador for Canada. Games have existed as cultural artefacts for much time, and in recent years,e have seen games and gaming join our paperbacks and story times in library programs and services around the world. Gaming can been seen quite noticeably in the Canadian library landscape. From the Greater Victoria Public Library’s video game lending, to the Atlantic Provinces Library Association’s “Games@theLibrary” week and Montreal’s grand 13-day “Montréal joue” festival, Canadian public libraries from coast to coast have integrated games and gaming into their organisations..

In Praise of Libraries

In Praise of Libraries | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

A salute to society's most successful civic institution. The public library is the only civic institution in my community that is uncompromisingly successful. Not everyone in my small town is crazy about the police force, and not everyone is all that pleased with the public schools. No one ever seems terribly happy with the planning board, the architectural review board, the board of trustees. Some people think the volunteer firemen get too much money for new equipment, though no one ever dares say it out loud. The public library is different. The public library is the community’s kindly grandmother: helpful, patient, understanding. Nobody in my town ever stands up and says he dislikes the public library. Nobody in your town does, either.

The combination of poetry and pictures has ancient roots, of course, but in our time, it shows up mostly in books published for children. But why should kids have all the fun? The eclectic list of titles below includes some of my favorite examples of how poetry can interact with artwork in surprising, beautiful ways, creating a unique experience for readers and viewers of all ages, including grown-ups.
