Fiction writers face a challenge in depicting the ubiquitous 21st-century experience of virtual existence. -Damien Walter
The author of “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies” prefers books with action: “I don’t like overrefinement, or to dwell in the heads of vaporous ladies with fine sensibilities.”
Big budgets and wide distribution aren’t enough on their own to sustain a magazine. Witness the demise of Holmes: The Magazine To Make It Right after less than two years of publication. Occasionally, it’s the low-budget, kitchen table–produced new periodicals that end up showing the most resiliency. An example of a past “best magazine of the year” published on a shoestring is hand-sewn Vintage, which against this reviewer’s expectations has published three issues and continues to thrive. -Steve Black

The Urban Green Space is going to be built in 2015, when the current BC Provincial Government lease expires on the top two floors. This will give the library the entire building and will allow for two floors to be devoted towards gardens and boutique bistros. The intention is to give people a quiet place to relax and enjoy reading an e-reader or book in the sun. There will be almost 40,000 square feet of room, all designed by Cornelia Oberlander. It will be open to the public, giving anyone who’s interested a chance to see a spectacular city view, and Vancouver sure is pretty in the summer. -Michael Kozlowski
Fans of magical prose and magical worlds, take heart. Titan Books has recently released a special limited edition version of steampunk legend James Blaylock’s The Aylesford Skull, a classic from one of the genre’s trailblazers. To celebrate the release, Blaylock has put together a list of forgotten or ignored works of literature that have inspired his own writing, and should be must-reads for anyone interested in science fiction or the fantastic. -Emily Temple

Peace, quiet, a chair, and a connection. ...you can only drink so much coffee, and anyway I find myself wanting a bit more peace. And the answer is, libraries! Many of the towns near here have very nice libraries, some big and fancy, some modest, but all with quiet corners where you can sit and either access their wifi (if they have it) or use your phone as a hotspot.

Librarianship today is about greeting each customer (in person or online) and making sure that his or her library visit is one of the best experiences of the day. Most importantly, it’s about listening to our users’ needs and connecting them with the information, resources, and services that can help them get on with their lives. -Brian Kenney

AMHERST – You’ve heard about it in newspapers and on TV. Now you’ll be able to see it in person: a 3D printer has been acquired by the Cumberland Public Libraries. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Spools of plastic are loaded into the desktop device as fuel for a printing nozzle, which lays down layer after layer of plastic, slowly creating a three-dimensional object. A bracelet. A screw and nut. A small, knotted curio. And taking shape on the printer upstairs at the Four Fathers Library, a red plastic smartphone cover. “It’s cooler than I thought it was going to be,” said Steve Weatherby, systems manager and CAP coordinator for the county’s library.

Here's my list of ten books that have made me think about what it would be like to live in a different place, or a different time, or a different body. Happy exploring!

Another seed lending library is featured. Especially love the quote from a parent,
"[Stephanie] Syson says the library has always been a place for her daughter to learn. The seeds just add another lesson.
"For her to see a little pot of dirt and to plant a seed into it, and then 30 days later being able to eat something from it is really exciting for her," she says. "She really enjoys seeing that whole process."
A process that now includes a trip to the local library."
