Are LGBT families are requesting storytimes representative of their families? I recently conducted a survey of public libraries in communities with large populations of same-sex families with children to determine how they were serving LGBTQ families. The responses I received from the librarians were candid and quite illuminating. For the most part, the librarians did not want to plan exclusive LGBTQ-themed storytimes but chose to plan programs inclusive of multiple family types. Librarians did note that when they planned inclusive programs they might have a LGBTQ caregiver come up after the program to thank them. It does seem that more and more librarians are becoming aware of serving LGBT families but the families are not necessarily demanding to be included. Rather, it is a nice surprise if they see representations of their families in the storytime.
A search of the Google Play Store will find many downloadable apps labeled as “genealogy.” However, many of them are simple ebooks or very simplistic programs that will not appeal to most genealogists. Here are the more robust available apps that allow you to store and retrieve your family tree information.

While first-year university students quickly become immersed in required reading, it's not often than an award-winning novel finds its way into the pile of academic texts.

The Free Library of Philadelphia's plan to eliminate late fees for children - a move recommended by librarians to prevent cutting off poor kids from library services - is set to begin July 1 after a City Council committee Wednesday defeated a bill that would have thwarted it. -Troy Graham

Is there a reason Vine videos are exactly six seconds long? Yes, and it has a lot to do with high profile court cases that almost destroyed hip hop music. If you haven’t tried it, Vine is a tool to make looping, six-second video clips and post them on social media or a website. The company, which is owned by Twitter, launched in January and its videos have already become a part of the Tribeca Film Festival, the U.S. Senate and major marketing campaigns. -Jeff John Roberts
Libraries are one of the few community spaces where people of all ages commingle. As a child my grandparents introduced me to the library, and we frequented their local branch during the week. When I became a librarian I was thrilled to serve not only in youth services, but also assist adults when the opportunity arose. Thinking back to my teen years volunteering at a local senior center, I wanted to introduce more library programs that could bridge the generation gap. -Claire Moore
I’d like to shine a light on a few great books I’ve read recently (or, at least, relatively recently) by women. These are fantasy novels or short-story collections of the highest quality, since my go-to genre tends to be fantasy, or at least fiction with a supernatural slant. -Johann Thorsson

Organizers in Hobbema are learning that collecting books alone does not make a library -- they must also cut through plenty of red tape.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you have local talent that would put original, interesting, local images on your walls that would get kids excited about reading and respect copyright laws. -Doug Johnson
Architect Lyn Rice says the design challenged library norms in some important ways. "There's a calm that descends on most reading rooms," he says. "The expectation is that people will physically behave." The teen floor turns that expectation on its head. Instead of siphoning teens off into different rooms (and locking away noisy activities), the space is airy and completely open. The openness means, among other things, that it only takes one or two librarians to monitor the entire space. -Amanda Erickson

A classic fairy tale of receives an invigorating update in Nosy Crow’s splendid Little Red Riding Hood. ($5.99; PreS-Gr 4). While the narrative remains the same—a little girl must avoid falling into the clutches of the Big Bad Wolf and save her grandparent—the reading experience is amplified by seamless interactivity and nonlinear storytelling. -Daryl Grabarek
You agree with me, I expect, that exposure to challenging works of literary fiction is good for us. That’s one reason we deplore the dumbing-down of the school curriculum and the rise of the Internet and its hyperlink culture. Perhaps we don’t all read very much that we would count as great literature, but we’re apt to feel guilty about not doing so, seeing it as one of the ways we fall short of excellence. Wouldn’t reading about Anna Karenina, the good folk of Middlemarch and Marcel and his friends expand our imaginations and refine our moral and social sensibilities? -Gregory Currie
Sophia loves to read. She even wrote her own book and did her book report on it! And even though she's just beginning her academic career, it's only the beginning of her story. -Olivia Vidal
Production will begin on a long-awaited screen adaptation of Lawrence Hill's acclaimed novel The Book of Negroes this fall, with the eventual TV miniseries to air on CBC and the American network BET.
The Twitters are abuzz today about Amazon’s new “Kindle Worlds” program, in which people are allowed to write and then sell through Amazon their fan fiction for certain properties owned by Alloy Entertainment, including Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, with more licenses expected soon. I’ve had a quick look at the program on Amazon’s site, and I have a couple of immediate thoughts on it. Be aware that these thoughts are very preliminary, i.e., I reserve the right to have possibly contradictory thoughts about the program later, when I think (and read) about it more. Also note that these are my personal thoughts and do not reflect the positions or policies of SFWA, of which I am (still but not for much longer) president. -John Scalzi

Great way to engage with your clients, a Pinterest Party. Here is how Central City Public Library, Nebraska, describes it:
"One popular event is the monthly Pinterest parties.
Lee said the library has a Pinterest account where staff members “pin” interesting crafting ideas and recipes. About once a month, a craft is chosen and a message is posted on Facebook telling patrons what materials to bring to the library to make the craft.
Tonight’s Pinterest party includes a cookie swap using recipes found on Pinterest. On Jan. 7, patrons will learn to make wire-wrapped jewelry, and last month they made wreaths. Lee said because participants bring their own supplies, the class cost is very low, usually around $1."
