Penguin Working with Baker & Taylor to Expand Ebook Lending to Libraries, Audiobook Lending Also Coming | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

The Penguin Group plans to announce on Monday that it is expanding its e-book lending program to libraries in Los Angeles and Cleveland and surrounding areas though a new distribution partner. In a pilot program that will begin this year, Penguin has worked with Baker & Taylor, a distributor of print and digital books, to start e-book lending programs in the Los Angeles County library system, which will reach four million people, and the Cuyahoga County system in Ohio.

What Do Public Librarians and Library Staff Do?

What Do Public Librarians and Library Staff Do? | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

This post was originally written as a response to a comment by the (ex)Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, claiming that running a library and being a librarian isn’t hard and doesn’t involve anything other than stamping books, and that anyone would find it easy to volunteer to run a library.

I’ve written, with suggestions from contributors, a list of activities and tasks, some obvious and some not so obvious, that are often the responsibility of public librarians and library staff. These are all things that we know people working in public libraries are expected to do, whether or not we think they should be, and include all levels of work including some basic day to day tasks and some things that would best be done by trained and qualified members of staff. These are things that paid staff are able to do that volunteers might struggle with, need training for or be unwilling to do (for reasons like it’s against their beliefs, or simply because they’re working for nothing.

Jacobs’ poetry is of the kind embraced by many of his contemporaries, a cerebral exuberance seen in the works of, say, Linda Besner or Jeramy Dodds, to name just two.

Oui, j'aime beaucoup le livre numérique

Oui, j'aime beaucoup le livre numérique | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Fiction Book Review: The Leopard by K.V. Johansen

Fiction Book Review: The Leopard by K.V. Johansen | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

A surprising number of characters and plot threads are deftly interwoven and tucked into comparatively few pages. The world of mages, half-demons, devils, and false bards is also an intriguing mix of the familiar and the novel, and while the plot is mostly an appetizer, the taste is fine enough to whet the reader’s appetite for future courses.

5 Things That People Don’t Realize their Librarians Do | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

As a librarian, we help to teach people how to become self-sufficient on the computer, how to find the answer to patron’s questions (no offence Google, but while you may come back with a million answers, we librarians come back with the right answer), develop graphic designs for advertisement, act as a social media managers, handle reader’s advisory, teach information literacy classes, act as storytellers, teach children. We wear many many caps.

“For instance, kids could come into the library for our Christmas activities, design their own cookie cutter, print it out on the 3D printer and then go home and bake something special for Grandma and Grandpa,” says McKend, the children’s librarian. “I’ve read about kids who are using 3D printers to design their own iPhone cases – that’s really popular. It’s all about letting them imagine something and then help them make it real.”

Michael Geist - Digital Canada 150: The Digital Strategy Without a Strategy

Four years after the Canadian government first announced plans to develop a digital economy strategy, Industry Minister James Moore traveled to Waterloo, Ontario, Friday for the release of Digital Canada 150. The long-awaited strategy document identifies five key areas for policy development: connecting Canadians, protecting the online environment, developing commercial opportunities, digital government, and Canadian content.

Digital Canada 150 ultimately suffers from some notable omissions. For a strategy document, it is curiously lacking in actual strategy. The government updates Canadians on what it has done and provides some insight into what it plans to do, but there are few new strategies articulated.

BookNet Canada Releases Benchmark Study on Digital Publishing

BookNet Canada Releases Benchmark Study on Digital Publishing | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

BookNet Canada’s “The State of Digital Publishing in Canada 2013” confirms that digital adoption is moving quickly, though it’s far from complete. The survey of more than 80 publishers indicates that mid-size and small presses have been slower to hire dedicated digital staff, but projects such as converting backlist catalogues and developing enhanced ebooks are becoming more common.
