In conjunction with the CSA pick-up point, the library started a librarian-supported reading service, through which residents are provided with a series of books tailored to their taste. Books are borrowed for three weeks at a time and placed alongside the farm produce boxes.

Who Needs Books? A Q&A with the ‘Bookless Library’ Head Librarian

Who Needs Books? A Q&A with the ‘Bookless Library’ Head Librarian | Library world, new trends, technologies | Scoop.it
Late last year, the Bexar County Library, which serves the area around San Antonio, TX, set up BiblioTech, the first all-digital library in the United States. Without any physical books at all, the branch raised a few eyebrows, but head librarian Ashley Eklof tells Library Journal that after a few months, the ebook-and technology-centric project has been so successful it already has its own spinoff at the county courthouse.

Google Glass: Try Before You Buy Technology at the library (Arapahoe Library District)

Google Glass: Try Before You Buy Technology at the library (Arapahoe Library District) | Library world, new trends, technologies | Scoop.it

by Michelle Cingrani

"The Arapahoe (Colorado) Library District (ALD) is making difficult-to-access technology available for patrons – like Google Glass, 3D printing, and The Studio, which is a state-of-the-art soundproof library space featuring a green screen and everything needed to create a masterpiece – including iMacs with Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie, GarageBand, high-definition video cameras, a guitar, a keyboard, and more.

“ALD is redefining libraries as warehouses of information to evolving centers where patrons can experience and use cutting-edge technology,” said ALD Executive Director Nicolle Davies. “Libraries are portals to the latest information – and offering access to technology is the newest version of that role.”

5 futures for libraries

Valerie Hill's curator insight, February 2, 9:23 PM

I am starting to think all librarians must become embedded librarians.  We all live in virtual worlds (whether or not we have avatars) yet we all need a physical community hub, too. Librarians can meet information literacy needs in all spaces.

How the Internet Has Changed Storytelling & Reading | USTelecom Blog

When we think about the great storytelling of the pre-Internet era, writers point out that a common plot device was the absence of real-time communication.

The telegram, a hand-delivered letter and even the landline phone offered far less connectivity compared with smartphones, e-mail, social media and the many communications pathways broadband provides today.

In an interesting series of interviews published in The New York Times, several writers share their perspectives on the changing technological landscape and how it has affected their work.
