Librarians as Instructional Designers: Strategies for Engaging Conversations for Learning

Librarians as Instructional Designers: Strategies for Engaging Conversations for Learning | Library Sources | Scoop.it

School, academic, and public librarians often cite collaborative partnerships as one of the greatest challenges of the profession—how do we invite collaboration, how do we nurture and sustain those partnerships, and how might those efforts translate into additional endeavors?  Identifying common goals and cultivating trust are two fundamental building blocks in this process, but libraries and librarians being sensitive to the needs of the community, whether it is an individual, group, or organization, is also paramount.

As a school librarian, I have found over the years that my thinking and work as an instructional designer and learning architect are the tasks I dwell in most of the time since they are so critical to the ways that the library can impact the learning culture in very direct and important ways in the larger school environment.  Helping teachers craft inquiry driven projects and learning experiences is nearly always complicated by the tensions created by time constraints, standardized testing, andcurricular mandates; negotiating these waters in a way that is respectful and sensitive to these challenges is a process that requires honest yet diplomatic discourse.  This design process can be especially tricky if an instructional partner is used to a solitary mode of teaching and/or ismore content-oriented and can feel like a delicate dance.

Blending books with technology

“My primary role is still a teacher, it’s instruction with the students,” says LeBlanc, taking a break in the school library one recent morning. “My standards are information-literacy standards, so it’s really about learning how to learn. With our focus in the school being on problem-based learning, it partners really well with what librarians are supposed to do. It’s all project-based, focused on how we learn, how we process information.”

100 Helpful Blogs For School Librarians (And Teachers) | Edudemic | Library Sources | Scoop.it

We love librarians. They’re the gatekeepers of knowledge and always looking to explore new ways to enhance the learning experience. I learned about the latest trends in libraries at this year’s CALICONin San Diego and love the move toward open source, cross-library sharing, and going digital.

But what if you weren’t able to attend CALICON or simply want to get a regular update on all the fun stuff happening with libraries? Lucky for you, our friends at Online College shared the following post with us. It details 100 great blogs librarians around the world should add to their RSS reader. Enjoy!

I like the list but would prefer that Content not be the first thing to show up.  There are a great many people who know content, but could not teach their way out of a paper bag.

I certainly have to agree but could I add more? The only addition I think I would make would be having learners as the centre of all of the above. ;)

Common Core & School Wide Literacy Thrusts Librarians Into Leadership Role

Common Core & School Wide Literacy Thrusts Librarians Into Leadership Role | Library Sources | Scoop.it

By Catherine Gewertz

Education Week

Already equipped with inquiry-based skills, librarians are helping teachers acquire the instructional methods they need to adopt.

-------

Literacy is the "common ground of the common core" (Janet Allen) and the expectation is that literacy is now a shared responsibility among all teachers. That means that close reading, writing, listening, speaking, and collaborating should be a normal part of instruction in every classroom every day.

The minute we gave our teachers the results of our school wide diagnostic assessment and taught them how to determine the text complexity of their course materials and the expected comprehension level of the students, they made a beeline for the library. Instead of being a nicety, our librarian instantly became a necessity to quality instruction in every classroom.
