Six Ways the Teacher's Role is Changing | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU

Six Ways the Teacher's Role is Changing | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU | library life | Scoop.it
During this time of significant educational change, we are forced to ask ourselves, what is the role of the teacher?

Teachers continue to be central to learning, but the role is changing significantly. Our children still need to develop real skills and real knowledge, but they also need to be self-reliant, resilient, and fully capable of re-inventing themselves. This means students must learn how to self-direct their learning.

So if students are self-directing their learning, what's the role of the teacher?

Teachers build the curriculum/lessons with the individual student based on his/her needs and interests rather than move through a fixed curriculum en masse.

Teachers provide the experiences and tools to access new knowledge in specific areas of interest as facilitators of individual pathways, rather than being a provider of the content or expert in one or every area,Teachers become experts in how people learn, not only in teaching.

Teachers support a community of learners in teams, possibly of multiple ages, rather than alone in classrooms with fixed grades of students.

Teachers have more autonomy over their daily schedule, and can be flexible to adjust their schedules to support student needs.

Teachers provide opportunities for real-world, connected, practical learning rather than isolated academics.
These are the types of changes in the teacher's role that are fundamental to developing students who are capable of independent learning and reinvention in a rapidly changing world.

Breaking the silo mentality

Breaking the silo mentality | library life | Scoop.it
With the very nature of work rapidly changing and continuously pivoting, business leaders can’t afford to not examine how silos may be limiting both the success of the business and their own impact as a leader.

Patrick Lencioni, author of Silos, Politics and Turf Wars describes how silos – ‘and the turf wars they enable devastate organsiations: They waste resources, kill productivity, push good people out the door and jeopardise the achievement of goals’. To overcome them he highlights the need for strong unified leadership that is prepared to look past the behaviours that result from silos and focus on the contextual issues that are often at the heart of the organisation.

While it can be very easy to assume that the inefficiencies and lack of collaboration in a team or organisation are a result of employees not knowing how to play nicely together, often the behaviours result from a sense of powerlessness to actually do anything about the problems they have identified. Leadership teams who recognise this and seek to create solutions that remove roadblocks, facilitate new ways of working and empower employees will create long-term solutions that are easy to execute and scalable.

Silos need to be broken from executive team example!

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, May 5, 12:47 PM
Teachers experience these silos, as well. How do we spend time with each other, sharing what we do? Margot Anderson proposes three essential things to break through the silos: unify around a common vision, focus teaching around that common vision, and recognize what motivates teachers and students. This would appear to be easy enough in teaching, but I have been told by teachers and principals we do too much of that vision stuff. Embedded cultures are challenging to transform.

What happens when students embrace design thinking?

What happens when students embrace design thinking? | library life | Scoop.it
The Global Day of Design just wrapped up on May 2nd. If you want to see what happens when 80,000+ students embrace design thinking, check out the Twitter stream and #GDD17 hashtag!

Students from six different continents (over 20 countries) participated and rocked this event in the second year in existence. Teachers and entire schools carved time out for students to not only beginning with empathy, not only brainstorm and navigate ideas, but to make, create, build, and design while in school.

This was only one day, and although the event was a success for our students, the real question is: What happens when students embrace design thinking beyond one day?

This article contains one of the most determining topics in education. Promoting desing thinking or critical thinking in students is one of the most challenging and significant aspects to do for teachers. Therefore, this article provides an example about how can we make that students come up with ideas which become trascendental in their likes and in their learning processes. Exposing students to such activities will make that our labor be more meaningful. Therefore, our task is to reflect how can we promote this kind of ideas in our classrooms.

Five pillars of Digital Transformation: The Digital Mindset

Five pillars of Digital Transformation: The Digital Mindset | library life | Scoop.it
As mentioned in the first post in this blog series, one of the five pillars for a successful digital transformation is to focus on the digital mindset. Digital transformation is much more than a fad or the latest management buzzword; it will affect everyone and every business at speeds never before seen. Industry players are excited, even if somewhat scared, about the prospects of what technology can bring and how it can change the boundaries they operate in. From automated self-driving cars to personalized medicine to therapy chatbots, the opportunities are immense. Things that were only possible in science fiction are now a reality.

Let’s look at the digital mindset from the perspective of a well-known aphorism: “To change the world, one needs to change oneself.”

The skills your kids should cultivate to be competitive in the age of automation - Quartz

The skills your kids should cultivate to be competitive in the age of automation - Quartz | library life | Scoop.it
We’re all getting used to the thought that in a not-so-distant future, competition for jobs won’t just be other humans, it will also be an intelligent robot, self-driving car, or other artificial agent. But in our gut, we know this can’t be the full truth, that there’s a more nuanced story. We at least believe that elite human skills will remain valuable even as automation eats the world. The hard part is figuring out which ones will be the most valuable and where they will be the most prized.
