Digital skills for life and work | library life | Scoop.it

The report, released today, highlights the emergence of a new global skills gap where gender, class, geography and age can have a huge impact on whether a person is able to harness new technologies or not. It also presents strategies for ensuring all groups of people can develop these skills.

Certainly, all the world around, everybody relies on technology more than they imagine or want. This is an interesting report to explore the challenges of this new reality.
Ralph Springett's curator insight, October 10, 2:36 PM
Supporting the development of digital skills is complex. Initiatives are often context specific and reliant on partnerships. In addition, the environment must be fertile for initiatives to flourish. Policy makers, education leaders, industry and the individual all have a role in equitable digital skills development.

Stop Teaching Students What to Think. Teach Them How to Think | library life | Scoop.it
The challenge is not information storage but information processing. It's not about information itself but how to use information. The teaching of creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and a love of learning itself will be critical to transitioning from the industrial age to the automated age.

Design Thinking: Instructional Design Reimagined

Design Thinking: Instructional Design Reimagined | library life | Scoop.it
Let me just get this off my chest--instructional design sometimes feels too academic, too stodgy. Sometimes it feels like the entire profession is stuck back in the 1950’s or 60’s. Perhaps it’s the way instructional design is still taught today or perhaps it’s just the way it’s practiced. Our systematic approach to instructional design often yields training that is too similar to the last course we produced; today’s training looks remarkably similar to the training from 10 years ago.

Where’s the true innovation in learning? Where’s the creativity? How do we design solutions that actually engage our learners?

What will learning look like in the latter half of the 21st century or 22nd century? How do we get there from here?

I’m not saying that innovative solutions aren’t out there, I’m just saying I want to find them. I want to study them. I want to build them.

I want to talk to others about instructional design challenges and opportunities with all the excitement and passion that NASA scientists must have felt when they heeded President Kennedy’s challenge to land mankind on the moon. Instructional design as its taught and practiced today just doesn’t do that for me. I don’t want to discuss criterion-referenced testing anymore. I don’t want to talk about cognitive load theory. I don’t want to discuss the merits (or lack thereof) of ADDIE.

Technology Alone Won’t Transform Education – We Need A Whole New Approach To Teaching And Learning

Technology Alone Won’t Transform Education – We Need A Whole New Approach To Teaching And Learning | library life | Scoop.it
Perhaps the main reason for this disappointing impact is that the inclusion of technologies in schools has done little to change the ‘tell and practise’ approach to teaching and learning – the predominant pedagogical practice of our time.

In this model, teachers tell students what knowledge is and what is worth knowing; meanwhile, students invest their limitless capacity for investigating, thinking critically, creating, hypothesising, and collaborating by memorising and practising what they’re told.

7 Reasons You Need to Try Voice Typing in Google Docs | Shake Up Learning

7 Reasons You Need to Try Voice Typing in Google Docs | Shake Up Learning | library life | Scoop.it
As a former ELA teacher, I am naturally drawn to technology that supports reading and writing. Google Docs is fully-loaded with some features that can save us time in and out of the classroom, and often times can even save us a little heartache when it comes to supporting students.

One tiny little feature that packs an amazing punch is Voice Typing in Google Docs. This is a speech-to-text feature that is built-in to the most popular word processor in the world, and it is available to you and your students if you have a microphone in your devices.

You can dictate all kinds of words, lists, and writing into Google Docs. You can also dictate formatting, punctuation, and editing. But wait…there’s more! YOU CAN DICTATE IN OTHER LANGUAGES!!!!! WHOA!!!!
