Education Rethink: Ten Myths About Technology @edrethink

Education Rethink: Ten Myths About Technology @edrethink | Library learning centre builds lifelong learners. | Scoop.it

John Spencer: "The following are ten myths I have found myself believing over the years:

Myth #1: Technology Dehumanizes...

Myth #2: Technology is Neutral...

Myth #3: Technology Makes Us Relevant...

Myth #4: We Can Use It Wisely...

Myth #5: Technology Saves Time...

Myth #6: Technology Is Just a Tool...

Myth #7: Technology Happens in a Vacuum...

Myth #8: Technology Equals Innovation...

Myth #9: "It's Not About the Tech"...

Myth #10: Technology Makes Us More Creative...

The bottom line: Technology has its place. Simply rejecting it outright is as dangerous as accepting it blindly. The point is to think critically about it and to do so with a sense of humility.

Some good discussion points here. Not a full argument for any of them excellent fodder for further thought.

Makes total common sense which matches up with what most high school libraries already collect...databases with curated ebooks as part of that platform.  Now for a similar "database collection" with award winning fiction books.

Students Don't Want to Lose Their School Libraries

Some letters that students wrote telling BESE what they thought about the revisions to Bulletin 741 that would allow school administrators to eliminate school libraries. The students were given a writing prompt to write a persuasive letter explaining why they want to keep their school libraries opened with a certified librarian at the helm.

Audrey Nay's insight:

The real reason to invest in the e-text comes not from a lighter backpack, reduced distribution costs, or even updateablity, but in the value-added features afforded by e-reading. As alluded to above, these features, impossible to replicate in print, include adding social networking functionality, searchability, and customizability by teachers. But I would also add:

Multiple reading levelsInstantly defined, pronounced, and translated textClarifying multi-media contentBuilt-in tools like graphing calculators, mind mapping software, timeline generators, and note-taking/organizing appsBuilt in pre-tests and checks for understandingLinks to source materials, primary resources and additional reading, viewing and listening experiencesAcitivities and games that reinforce concepts and increase engagement

something old, something new, something "borroughed" (from education, from technology fields), something blue, a clear sky for teacher-librarian role  today and tomorow

Anne McLean's curator insight, March 12, 2013 1:47 AM

Teacher Librariàns should be a teaching anda learning resource in the digital age.  Not the curator of a museum of books.
