Should libraries continue to stock 'copies' of textbooks?  Guess it must be open-source, or whole site licence?

Sue Osborne's curator insight, July 6, 2013 11:39 PM

The Library sits in the middle, assisting the student in acessing the digital content and teaching the critical thinking skills required to navigate such content. Also, in helping students group together content and resources in a coherent, relevant way. Libraries will do what they have always done - adapt. Books are books, regardless of format. Now is the time for libraries to take themselves to the students, rather than waiting for the students to come to them. The "right now" library service is the way of the future, but there is always a curation and dissemination role too if we put ourselves at the front line (instead of in the back room).

Anne Whisken's comment, July 7, 2013 6:27 PM
Great summary Sue. Where do you see the concept of 'reference desk' sitting in the future school library?

I AM A {SOCIAL} LIBRARIAN infographic - Free download! | Library learning centre builds lifelong learners. | Scoop.it
Download, embed and share The Social Librarian infographic. The social librarian is enmeshed in the fabric of the Internet of Things as curator, educator, filter and beacon.

"Social today means so much more than sending a tweet or posting to Facebook. The social librarian is enmeshed in the fabric of the Internet of Things as curator, educator, filter and beacon. In this complex, dynamic and demanding environment, librarians are extending themselves and empowering library users.

In recognition of this, Elsevier's Library Connect Newsletter (@library_connect) and Joe Murphy (@libraryfuture), Librarian & Technology Analyst/Trend Spotter, offer up a visual portrait of The Social Librarian, and invite you to download and post, share on your social streams, and discuss with your library stakeholders.

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom | Library learning centre builds lifelong learners. | Scoop.it

That we have evolved our favorite forms of communication is obvious without more than simply watching our students walk through the hallways. It would be easy to demonize social media and each medium that it provides for human interaction. But it would be educationally valuable to embrace it, turning it into an opportunity for our students to develop an appreciation for the advanced cognitive skills they employ on a daily basis. Why not study the highly visual communication models connecting the thoughts that mean the most to them with the social networks where they live their lives?

Visual literacy matters

Visual literacy is the ability to:

  1. Process and make meaning of information presented in an image.
  2. Communicate our own ideas through principles of design.
  3. Create our own messages that capture our visual thinking in a way that conceptualizes problems to given solutions.
Ness Crouch's curator insight, March 28, 9:00 PM

Visual Literacy has a new emphasis in the Australian Curriculum. This is certainly a good article to give ideas for embedding some good quality practice in digital learning.
