Ways to Finish the Concrete Floors

Kim Simshauser's insight:

The most expensive part of my renovation was removing the carpet and refinishing the concrete beneath to have an area where students could have food/drinks and the floor could be easily cleaned.  I did the most basic type of finish (pictures and my vendor's info can be found on my Media Center Renovation Resource Page on my school's website).  However, these ideas are so cool and neat, if you've got a arty parent or someone in the community that can do something like this, you can make your floors a work of art!

11-7-13 - Shout out to my GaETC attendees and some more info!

GaETC Attendees - thanks for coming to my session!

Kim Simshauser's insight:

Another reason I love media specialists - they don't wait to ask their questions - my inbox is full of people who are ready to do amazing things!

I had such a great time talking to you, seeing what you've done to your media centers (so many amazing, stealable ideas!), and providing any guidance that I could to help you as you embark on the journey to make your media center what your kids and your teachers want and need.  Due to the number of questions that I have received about furnishings, tech, etc. in my media center, I'm going to create a web page on my school's site to provide you with the specs on the items that I purchased so that you can modify it to work for you.  The link is http://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/Page/44170 - right now there's just a message that info is coming, but over the next two days, expect to see a lot of what you've been asking and looking for.

Email me at ksimshauser@forsyth.k12.ga.us if you have questions or want me to come by and brainstorm with you about ideas for your low-cost makeover - I'll be glad to use my experiences and knowledge of local and online vendors to save you some time (and hopefully, some money!

Best to you all,

Kim

Shop Choice 10 oz. Paper Hot Cup with Coffee Design 1000 / Case - In stock, low price, ready to ship same day - Our customers love us! Find out why..
Kim Simshauser's insight:

I found out that cups really do matter - I started our cafe with some foam cups and standard tops from Sam's Club - cheap, but the kids weren't impressed and I was concerned about the eco impact.  A lot of web searching found these cool recycled paper cups with the pop up lids similar to our favorite coffee shops and sales DOUBLED because I think the kids just like being able to walk around like they were coffee shop hipsters!

I use the Webstaurant Store (http://www.webstaurantstore.com/) and purchase these cups and tops (I don't buy huge bulk so my total cost for the cup is about 10 cents each (the box is bulky so shipping costs a lot).  Yes, foam is cheaper, but I make more money with these!

craigslist: atlanta classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

craigslist provides local classifieds and forums for jobs, housing, for sale, personals, services, local community, and events
Kim Simshauser's insight:

Ah, craigslist.  I love it!  This is the place where I find the coolest stuff on the cheap.  Be careful with electronics (if you are not someone who's confident with checking out used gear, take someone who knows - if they won't let you try it out or look inside, don't buy it!).  I generally do most of my purchasing in the furniture and household section - my searches usually include "used office furniture" (you would be AMAZED at the amount of barely used high quality office furniture there is out there!) or "ikea" (this is how I buy my Poang chairs - all are craigslist finds at a fraction of the original cost!) or "used school furniture."  Household will generally yield rugs, paintings, and the decorative cool doodads that make your media center more interesting!

IKEA Atlanta Home Page - IKEA

IKEA Atlanta Home Page - IKEA | Library Ideas - updates that are on the cheap but your kids will love! | Scoop.it
Local store info for IKEA Atlanta
Kim Simshauser's insight:

IKEA - the inexpensive solution to creating a trendy media center.  I've bought wall stickers that look like grandfather clocks, cool chairs that really hold up, and lots of artwork that doesn't cost much, but add a very hip vibe to your surroundings.  The best part is to find ways to repurpose some of their items - a cool belt hanger is a great cord organizer, they have boxes for every need (and they look neat enough that you can have them out).  The POANG chair is a student favorite (and a media specialist favorite, since I can take the covers off and wash them when they get "funky"). Their bookends are cool and heavy enough for library use, and they are FAR cheaper than the one's you'll get from a library vendor.  I could probably do a complete page on repurposing IKEA items for media centers!

Kim Simshauser's insight:

So I've started a page that lists all of the vendors I used, how to contact them, and my insights as we updated our Media Center on the cheap.  Want to know what cups I use in the cafe?  That's here.  Who to order restaurant furniture from?  That's here, too.  I'll be updating and adding a lot of info as things change, so check back often!

Kim Simshauser's insight:

The tech geek in me loves Tiger Direct - the smart shopper in me loves Tiger Direct (and their education sister, Global GovEd).  I purchased the large screen TVs (refurbished/open box, but with the same guarantee as new) and the video switcher for our media cafe and I couldn't have asked for better quality, service and price!  If you've ever dealt with them, you know they stand by their products, often sending a replacement before I even get the old product sent back in the rare case that something's not quite right).  Find out who your school rep is and let them know what you're looking for - ours is great about letting me know about sales, etc.

Buy and sell electronics, cars, fashion apparel, collectibles, sporting goods, digital cameras, baby items, coupons, and everything else on eBay, the world's online marketplace
Kim Simshauser's insight:

Everyone knows ebay, but when you're looking for technology for your media center, you can't beat it.  I've purchased interactive boards, projectors, document cameras, bar code readers and more from the vendors on ebay and the very few times things haven't been great, the vendor gave me my money back!  Look for great ratings and good guarantees on tech purchases and you'll usually be just fine.

Restaurant Furniture, Restaurant Chairs, Bar Stools, Tables | RestaurantFurniture4Less.com | Library Ideas - updates that are on the cheap but your kids will love! | Scoop.it
Kim Simshauser's insight:

I had originally gone to a library supply vendor to look for high top tables and chairs and nearly keeled over when I got the prices!  Then I decided to do what smart restaurants do - find a restaurant supply and see how they compared.  These guys were kind enough to allow me to "borrow" a chair and see how it compared to the ones from the other vendor, and I honestly couldn't tell a difference in anything but the price!  Great to work with, and the prices were over 50% less than "school" oriented vendors (a barstool that appears to be exactly the same  - 107.99 or 47.99?  That was a no brainer!). Of course, I had to deal in cash, so thankfully, the PTSO came through and helped me out and allowed me to use my county funds for more books and technology!
