"In our library, we have a special section just for books about making.  We have picture books, chapter books, and lots of nonfiction books about different types of making and inspiration.

One of my new favorites that I added this summer is called Maker Lab…28 Super Cool Projects from DK and the Smithsonian, with a foreword by Jack Andraka.

Maker Lab features 28 super cool projects using everyday materials that you will have around your library, classroom and home."

A very relevant question. Educators are in an uncomfortable position between the right to express themselves as they like in a public (or private) forum and their social role as educators and 'role models'.

Australia is facing a crisis of computer literacy after the latest national IT tests showed a sharp drop in results among school students. According to the report released by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) on Tuesday, nationally only 55 per cent of students were considered IT proficient. The results come despite up to 98 per cent of students reporting that they had access to a computer at home. "One of the things that we are observing here is that the increased use of devices for social and communication purposes has hidden the decline in the use of more sophisticated uses of the devices," said ACARA's chief executive officer Robert Randall.

Sue Osborne's comment, November 16, 2015 7:24 PM
This is interesting and supports the anecdotal evidence I see with students every day. I have Year 7 students who don't know how to print a document in colour, who are GLUED to their iPads. Frustrating - they think they know it all because they are constantly attached to the device, but they know VERY little.
