In an era dominated by constant information and the desire to be social, should the tone of thinking for students be different? This is the world of Google. In this world full of information abundance, our minds are constantly challenged to react to data, and often in a way that doesn’t just observe, but interprets. Subsequently, we unknowingly “spin” everything to avoid cognitive dissonance. As a result, the tone of thinking can end up uncertain or whimsical, timid or arrogant, sycophant or idolizing–and so, devoid of connections and interdependence. The internet and social media are designed to connect, and with brilliant efficiency they do indeed connect—words and phrases, images and video, color and light, but not always to the net effect they might. The nature of social media rests on identity as much as anything else—forcing subjectivity on everything through likes, retweets, shares, and pins. Instead, we might consider constant reflection guided by important questions as a new way to learn in the presence of information abundance. But this takes new habits. Delete the scoop?

The fact that specific social networks should become passe is hardly surprising. Social network sites like MySpace are a testament to how quickly a network can be abandoned and forgotten. There are also an ever increasing number of sites and mobile applications that allow sharing, leading to a corresponding decrease in time spent on any one platform. At the same time, social networks like Facebook and Twitter are trying to find ways of making money which has led to an increase in the amount of content that is pure advertising masquerading as shared content. This has recently been made worse with the announcement) by Facebook of a revamped news feed that will make the page look more like a personalised newspaper or magazine.

This is directly showing how and why the face and usage of social networking site Facebook is slowy detoriating. This article however is suggesting that it is occuring due to the amount of parents (or older generations) signing up and socialising with the younger age groups. Either way Facebook is desperately trying to update and keep users active before it "dies" like MySpace. Delete the scoop?

This video shows just a little of what can be achieved by using mobile learning devices appropriately. All students can benefit from using this type of technology.

Yes it is about right here, right now but it is not about information on demand. It is about communication on demand and I think libraries are doing something about that.

It must evolve mindfully. The key question will be "What do I blog for?"

How do we develop resiliency in urban youth when it comes to reading? Maybe you're thinking I could send students to the nearby public library? Not a bad idea except for the fact that it closed down due to citywide budgetary problems. And while Borders may not be around, there has to be a nice cozy Barnes & Noble where my students can plop down and spend some time (if not some cash on books), right? Not really; there aren't many easily accessible bookstores in the urban neighborhoods millions of America's students inhabit. Delete the scoop?

I usually do follow back those who RT me with a salient, amusing, or clever comment or thought. Esp. if they have a profile photo, description, and web link to their work. I look to see if they engage in conversations or only auto RT others. I DO like a lively convo!
