lyn_hay's curator insight, February 12, 2014 8:05 PM

This article outlines the major issues identified by 300 Australian school library staff. The strongest concerns of school library staff were the lack of adequate funding for resources and the lack of time and qualified personnel available to provide a high standard of service, with primary schools more likely to cite budget and staffing constraints. Also of note was concern of school library staff in being able to effectively support the resourcing of the new Australian Curriculum, with over half of the schools stating they had difficulty finding age- and curriculum-appropriate resources was a substantial access issue. One major challenge currently facing school library staff is how to manage the growing number of digital resources for those who have access to funds. However, there is also growing concern of smaller schools and primary schools being left behind with regard to digital resource provision.

It would be great to see more teacher librarians taking the time to complete this survey at the end of 2014 to help our profession gain a better understanding of the true status of school library collections in Australia's schools.

"Information overload" - libraries and bookshops have always contained overwhelming quantiities of data, just as a phonebook used to - but most people never felt compelled to engage with all of it... has that changed?

Trove crowdsourcing behaviour

Crowdsourcing, members of the public adding information to records, is being used as a method for Libraries to enhance the details of their collections.

This presentation from ALIA Online by Paul Hagon provides some interesting ideas on the use of user analytics in determining where to invest energy in library collection building and management, and in services.

Recognise that there is a difference between priorities for users that can only access a collection online versus those who visit the collection in person.

Thoughts from Carl Grant: Librarians should make this investment in themselves. | Library curating | Scoop.it

Carl Grant: When the conversation turned to professions, I noted I was a librarian and I received the, not at all unusual response, of a grimace and the question: "Isn't that a dying profession?  I mean everything is online right?  Who wants a paper book anymore?"

Carl recommends four resources that will help librarians to prepare a response to the above question. He states, that the books contain incredibly important information for every librarian to absorb, even though only one of them is written specifically for librarians.

Excellent article featuring the thoughts of a school principal as she works with her school community to build new libraries in the junior and senior schools. I love her vision, "We felt very strongly that the library is more than a facilitating process – it has cultural significance which matters. The library can inspire" and "Our approach is unashamedly about inspiring a love of learning". I think the Cabinet of Curiosities concept is a brilliant program in stimulating students' interest and encouraging inquiry.

The AASL Status of Staffing of School Libraries Task Force has been asked to collect data related to current school library staffing levels and school librarian roles/responsibilities.

If you are working as a teacher librarian in a school in the USA, please contribute to this survey. The task force needs to collect data from each individual school library program. It's a really brief survey, so no excuses for not contributing your school's data!!

Remember: Building evidence of school library impact is dependent upon individual TL practitioners, not the researchers collecting the data!!!

Jamie McKenzie provides a much needed critique of ebooks which goes beyond format, and into the content, experience, usability and purpose of reading.

"The software used to convert print to digital usually damages the original page design painstakingly achieved for the print book... In order to work on a wide range of devices ranging from smart phones to iPads and laptops, format is sacrificed to generic scrolling words."

iBooks Author is given a positive wrap.
