Budget crisis shutters libraries at 2 top schools

When Central High School opened its new library in 2005 - a $4.5 million research and media hub funded by alumni - Apple named it a national model. Students visited it more than 147,000 times last...

Karen R. Harker's insight:

Not even and endorsement from Apple could save public school libraries...what I don't understand is how they can justify shuttering a $4.5 million facility.

Karen R. Harker's insight:

I'm just now starting to see this acronym - but looking past this statement of validity, I see some intriguing insight into Rick's "depth perception".  While he is certainly not the first to use space & time to represent perspective, it is nice to see a concise model and the up- and down-sides of each focus.

So, where are you?  Me, I'm all over this matrix - for a few hours, I am very short-term minded, tending to developing a structure to collect data for a "fix" to our system.  Later today, I'll be discussing issues related to planning for our library.  Tomorrow, I'll be in a meeting to advance the institution on assessing curriculum.  This weekend, I hope to start thinking about ways to "change the world", or at least the library world.

The point to me is knowing the limitations and advantages of each perspective, and using them holistically.

This is huge: the biggest photo collection in American history is now fully searchable and available as an interactive map through Photogrammar, a digital project from Yale University. Aside from Dorthea Lange's most famous works, and any photos you know…
Karen R. Harker's insight:

This article made me wonder how a library could integrate the plethora of image collections such as this into their own systems, making them easier to find.  I love the map - this would be great for students doing local research - unfortunately, I couldn't get any of the images to appear.

Penn Libraries Adds Records and Direct Links For 2 Million Titles From HathiTrust to Library Catalog | LJ INFOdocket | Library Collections | Scoop.it
Some recent news out of the University of Pennsylvania. With the addition of the HathiTrust titles Penn s catalog is now nearly 50% larger. From Penn Libraries News: The University of Pennsylvania Libraries became an institutional partner of HathiTrust in 2010, two years after the partnership’s creation.
Karen R. Harker's insight:

The Hathi Trust is on my list of collections to explore and make a case for becoming a member.  I'm concerned, however, about adding so many more records to our catalog, making things more difficult to find.  Penn Libraries enhanced their catalog to include faceted searching or filtering, a feature I think is critical to implementing in library search interfaces.  Also important is the development of a useful method to browse collections, to enable serendipitous discovery.

Harvard’s Loeb Classical Library goes digital | Harvard Magazine Sep-Oct 2014

Harvard’s Loeb Classical Library goes digital | Harvard Magazine Sep-Oct 2014 | Library Collections | Scoop.it
A digital “rebirth” for the series of Greek and Roman classics (Harvard University Press makes all 520 volumes of the Loeb Classical Library accessible online.
Karen R. Harker's insight:

Here is what we could do if copyright had not been so overextended.  Loeb's classical library, envisioned to "easily fit in readers’ coat pockets", not is available online.  The reader app "will enable readers to search for words and phrases across the entire corpus, to annotate content, to share notes and reading lists with others, and to create their own libraries using personal workspaces."  I like the ability to see the Greek and the English translation side-by-side.  For scholars of these texts, this is necessary.

Now, this will not be freely available - it will be available by subscription to institutions & libraries.  Given that it cost over $1M to create, this would not be unreasonable.  I'm wondering - what is Harvard's reputation for pricing?  Is this "a money-maker" or a "cost-recovery"?

Good response:

You’ve worked in traditional libraries, including a school library in Wisconsin prior to this—do you miss the stacks?

I thought I would but I don’t. The books are still here, they’re’ just in a different format. There’s a place for traditional bookshelves, especially in areas where people have rare books and manuscripts. In a public library, though, our mission is about access, programming, and getting patrons what they want.
