What Types of E-Books Are Best for Young Readers? | Library | Scoop.it
Could e-books actually get in the way of reading? In a study looking at students’ use of e-books created with Apple’s iBooks Author software, the Schugars discovered that the young readers often skipped over the text altogether, engaging instead with the books’ interactive visual features.

Awesome Visual on The Importance of Reading Aloud to Kids

Awesome Visual on The Importance of Reading Aloud to Kids | Library | Scoop.it

"Below is a graphic I come across while wading through my feeds today. The visual emphasizes the importance of read-alouds  in early literacy learning. It also features a set of interesting facts on how reading aloud helps in kids' literacy development. Reading aloud to kids is not only beneficial to young learners linguistic abilities but is also connected to their social and cognitive development. And the most important of them all is that only 15 minutes of read-aloud is enough to make a difference"

This  graphic has a place in every library and classroom, but also in every home (just so we don't lose sight of the huge importance of reading aloud).

Print material is still so important!

Joanne Schenkel's curator insight, November 2, 2013 10:29 PM

Yes! My year 7 students expressed the same view last week. They prefer to interact with paper books and love the fact that I can guide them to find a book which is a "perfect fit". Many students said they would then use the recommendations from their classmates, particularly those with whom I'd encouraged to try a new author or series.

This study employed a formal external evaluation of school community perceptions and understandings with regard to school library impact. The researchers conclude that "reaching out to stakeholders in an organized, purposeful way, and not in a crisis mode, garnered substantial support for school libraries and school librarians". They also found that "inviting stakeholders to learn about the research of the profession in a professional and inclusive environment allowed them to thoughtfully reflect on school libraries’ value and become school library champions." This study provides individual TLs and network, regional or state associations with strategies to implement as part of an advocacy campaign, particularly when stakeholders are provided with local examples of school library impact.

I think the real takehome message here for the TL profession is the importance of developing advocacy programs when school libraries exist and are making an impact. The idea being that advocacy when school libraries are in a position of strength can help establish a community of 'champions' to support school libraries if/when a challenge to their existence is raised.

School Library Monthly - Research that Resonates: Influencing Stakeholders”

School Library Monthly - Research that Resonates: Influencing Stakeholders” | Library | Scoop.it
The library profession has strong evidence that students in schools with good school libraries learn more, achieve academic standards, and score higher on standardized tests than students in schools without school libraries and librarians. School librarians must seize the charge to use this body of research and master "messaging" strategies to create library advocates among school and community stakeholders and, hopefully, one or two school library champions.

A practical article by Deb Kachel providing teacher librarians with strategies to develop their capacity to present a carefully crafted argument on the importance of school libraries based on research findings of school library impact studies. I love her closing statement: "School librarians must learn, embrace, and share these research findings." Absolutely!

For a teacher: "Co-teaching reduces your workload and provides students with more individualized instruction."For an administrator: "Studies have shown that school libraries can improve student test scores."For a parent: "The library program can help your teen become career and college ready."For a school board member: "It is difficult to help students achieve the reading targets without the kind of books that students want to read. The school library supports students' reading interests."For the curriculum coordinator: "When school librarians and teachers work together, they teach information skills, content, and Common Core standards all in one lesson or unit. Students learn more in a shortened amount of time and benefit from the expertise of two educators."To the Learning Support Coordinator: "The research shows that the reading and writing scores improve for struggling students—ELL, deficient readers, the disabled—when they use school libraries and are taught by a school librarian."
