Innovation In Libraries Can Lead To Innovation In Schools

Libraries are brilliant because books are brilliant.
So how we organize those books is no small matter—and deserves additional scrutiny as technology changes things.

As social tools, when a society changes, so must its tools. Definitions of purpose and quality must also be revised continuously. What should a school “do”?

This is a fantastic article to get you thinking about your school - is it a good school? Are you helping make it so? I especially love the comment about the ballet - it makes me think of the invisibility of all the things that make a library a well-oiled machine...

So many great ideas to take from this...

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, May 6, 2015 9:50 AM

Ackroyd decided this wasn’t optimal. “People no longer have to come to a library to get information,” she says, “so the library has to get people coming in for different reasons. Students need somewhere to socialize, create things and collaborate.”

Video book trailer examples

Video book trailer examples | Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

In a small group, (3 is best!) choose a favourite book that you’ve already read. Brainstorm together how you could get readers interested in the book without giving it all away. Don’t try and summarize the story, just a few visual & fun ideas that will be intriguing or eye catching. Think of a movie trailer or a book blurb and how they can draw you into the story without giving away any spoilers! Make sure at some point you show the cover of the book and say the title –even if it’s for only 1-2 seconds.

Libraries are dying? Think again.

Libraries are dying? Think again. | Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Despite enduring budget cutbacks and being forced to reinvent their services in the face of the ubiquitous Internet, public libraries remain staple institutions in various communities. There's been an increase in the use of public libraries in the U.S. over the past decade. Services such as public computers doubled in usage in the past 10 years, and libraries saw a circulation increase of 2.46 billion materials in 2010, the highest ever reported, according to a report by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Facing declining visitors and uncertainty about what to do about it, library administrators in the new town of Almere in the Netherlands did something extraordinary. They redesigned their libraries based on the changing needs and desires of library users and, in 2010, opened the Nieuwe Bibliotheek (New Library), a thriving community hub that looks more like a bookstore than a library.
