UK : Fight privatisation: Save our libraries

Over the last year more than 100 libraries have either been closed, are now run by volunteers or have been made into social enterprises, ie privatised. Here Paul Callanan, Socialist Party member from Greenwich, south London, describes the onslaught by a Labour-led council carrying out government cuts. He also explains the huge battle, led by the Unite union, including Socialist Party members, involving possibly the first strike against cuts in libraries.

Are Librarians Encouraging Public Libraries to Abide by COPPA?

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) was created to prevent corporations from collecting data about children without parental permission. This law explicitly does not apply to public institutions, non-profits, and government agencies. Yet, many public institutions not only choose not to collect data about children; they forbid children from accessing information without parental permission. Much to my surprise, this includes many public libraries.

Goodbye, state funding for California libraries | KALW

The bad news is that state funding for California libraries has been completely eliminated. Now libraries in the Bay Area, as in the rest of the state, will lose funding for literacy programs, InterLibrary Loans, and miscellaneous expenses such as librarian training programs and books.

Fewer California schools have trained librarians

Fewer than 1 out of 4 schools in California is staffed with a credentialed librarian, according to the state Department of Education. Recent figures compiled by the department show there are about 900 school librarians in the state, down from more than 1,100 two years ago.
