Collaboration between the Howard County Library and Howard County Public Schools

 

From the project website: "The first comprehensive partnership of its kind in the country, A+ Partners in Education ("A+") has become a vital component of Howard County's culture. Launched in 2002, the partnership now includes all three educational institutions in Howard County: Howard County Library System (HCLS), Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), and Howard Community College (HCC)."


Elements of the collaboration include HiTech, HCLS' STEM Digital Media Lab for teens: "HiTech students began by learning game design principles from instructors at HCLS and Mindgrub Technologies. Over a six-week period, the students developed game logic, layout, characters, music, and sound effects to create the humorous and challenging Escape from Detention, which centers on a student who was wrongly sent to detention because of a classmate’s antics."

Al Smith, a teacher-librarian (TL) "with a high school library program that has evolved closer to a learning commons model," describes in his LiterateOwl blog how the library continues to evolve as a learning sandbox similar to the model of "library as social learning center" that several of us are exploring.
