Your Startup's Best Friend? The Local Library
Fox Business
In the age of Google and e-books, the local library has become little more than a relic of the pre-Internet past for most people.
Alex Carver's insight:

As nonprofits, we often don't serve the entrepreneurs in our community to the best of our ability. This quick article touches on the services we can provide, including the array of networking opportunities that can boost local business.

How can we preserve our digital heritage for future generations? | gbtimes

How can we preserve our digital heritage for future generations? | gbtimes | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Preserving our digital heritage is by no means a one-time task. On World Audiovisual Day (October 27) gbtimes takes a look at this continuous challenge.
Alex Carver's insight:

The idea of digital preservation is one that libraries should be aware of. The hardware needed to access a book (a brain and eyes, among others) don't change. The devices that we use today will be obsolete many times over in our lifetimes. What responsibility do libraries and archives have in preserving digital objects? Consider the scope of such a project when the five file types preserved in this archive required 11,000 files.

Irondequoit High School students envision library as 'a center of civic and cultural engagement'

Irondequoit High School students envision library as 'a center of civic and cultural engagement' | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Students attending the 15th Summer Institute at Irondequoit High School researched ideas for the new Irondequoit Public Library while improving their English language arts and social studies skills.
Alex Carver's insight:

This is just one exchange of ideas in one town, but the philosophy behind it is something that we can all embrace. Why pound our heads against our desks (and monitors) trying to figure out what younger patrons want when we can just invite them in and have them tell us? The suggestions will share some similarities, but the specifics will differ based on population and the spaces we have to work with.

Younger Americans’ Library Habits and Expectations

Younger Americans’ Library Habits and Expectations | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Americans ages 16-29 are heavy technology users, including in using computers and internet at libraries. At the same time, most still read and borrow printed books, and value a mix of traditional and technological library services.
Alex Carver's insight:

Patrons under 30, the current and future users of our services, do not want books and librarians to disappear from their spaces. Instead, the want a mix of the traditional and the digital. These patrons are not only more likely to use the technology, they are also more likely to have read a traditional book in the past year. With library programming mostly focused on children and senior citizens, we should do more to court these "superusers."

Philip Pullman leads challenge to publishers over e-book library lending - Telegraph

Philip Pullman leads challenge to publishers over e-book library lending - Telegraph | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Authors led by Philip Pullman are demanding higher payments from publishers for their works to be lent by libraries as e-books, as part of a battle over how revenues from digital reading will be carved up.
Alex Carver's insight:

Authors need to be paid fairly for their work, absolutely. The introduction of ebooks and ebook lending have created a thorny mess for publishers, authors, and libraries. But is this higher price that needs to be passed on to the already overburdened public libraries? Let's imagine a new scenario: one where the libraries pay Mr. Pullman directly for his work and we roll it into our digital collection without worrying about expiration dates or number of checkouts handed down from the big publishers.

The Future of Libraries: Short on Books, Long on Tech

The Future of Libraries: Short on Books, Long on Tech | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
This isn't your childhood library. The Hunt Library at North Carolina State University is beautiful. The main floor looks more like a sleek Apple showroom than a stuffy library.
Alex Carver's insight:

Librarians looking at the Hunt Library in North Carolina may be looking at a taste of their own future, and I hope that's exciting news. Open spaces, tech centers, display screens for public use--this creates an environment that'll both woo the public back into our spaces and more expertly meets the needs of an increasingly technological society.

Is a paperless library still a library?

Is a paperless library still a library? | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
The concept of a library is going to be re-invented in Texas with the launch of a public library with digital rather than printed books.
Alex Carver's insight:

I'm glad that this article discusses the matter of cost. Digital products do not drive down expenditures in a library's budget, and in some cases offer less freedom than their ink and paper counterparts. Some digital editions, such as those offered by HarperCollins, may be limited in the number of times they can be checked out.

Children In Philadelphia School District Get Their Very Own Free Library Cards - CBS Philly

Children In Philadelphia School District Get Their Very Own Free Library Cards - CBS Philly | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Thousands of Philadelphia school kids will begin getting city library cards, starting Wednesday.
Alex Carver's insight:

With school libraries losing funding, public libraries have an opportunity (and a responsibility) to step in and offer services where a gap exists. We can also serve as a rallying point for supporters and volunteers who are trying to reopen de-funded libraries.

CLEMSON: Clemson University library unveils classroom of the future | Education | The State

CLEMSON: Clemson University library unveils classroom of the future | Education | The State | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
With a supercomputer connection 10,000 times faster than the typical home Internet connection and a bank of synchronized ultra-high-definition video screens that spans nearly 60-square-feet, the new digital resources laboratory unveiled Thursday at...
Alex Carver's insight:

I read recently about copyright activist and professor Lawrence Lessig's idea that we are moving into a new era where IPs are Readable/Writable, not locked down by the powers that control them. This new tech room at Clemson University is in the spirit of that idea, even if they hadn't heard of Lessig. With the power to project images, install software, and share with others using this equipment, the students are in an excellent place to begin mashing, remixing, and creating content of their own. This kind of space should be the model which both academic and public libraries should emulate.

Alex Carver's insight:

This is a great idea starter for non-book items that can be checked out to the public. Especially cool are the green screen and GoPro cameras which are relatively inexpensive and can add that "wow" factor to our services.

Discover Tech exhibit provides fun with science for all ages

Discover Tech exhibit provides fun with science for all ages | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Kids can put their future into play this summer at "Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference," an interactive exhibit at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library through July 9.
Alex Carver's insight:

This one got me thinking about the way that some people (my friends and fellow English majors back in college, especially) think about the library: A cozy place to read some poetry or get the latest installment in the hottest new fantasy series. This article proves that some libraries are doing their part to emphasize some of the "harder" sciences, and encourage the love of science and math in our younger patrons.

Orange County Library System Expands Computer Training Program with Treehouse - The Digital Shift

Orange County Library System Expands Computer Training Program with Treehouse - The Digital Shift | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Treehouse Island has launched a subscription-based service that will allow library patrons to learn programming skills at home or on any library computer.
Alex Carver's insight:

As our institutions adapt, and as we shift as professionals, we need to provide opportunites for our patrons to shift with us. If the mission of the library is to create an educated population, leaving out the technical knowledge that's becoming increasingly vital is an egregious oversight. This article covers some of the tools we can provide to meet this need.

WATCH: Library Sets Book Domino World Record

WATCH: Library Sets Book Domino World Record | Libraries in Flux | Scoop.it
Seattle Public Library just set an unusual world record in its incredible flagship building: the world's longest book domino chain.
Alex Carver's insight:

So I caught myself when I wondered whether they had kept the books in order for easy reshelving! What I SHOULD have wondered was whether this media attention will bring more people into their library, and I'm sure that the answer is yes. In this new age, we need to use all the tools at our disposal to highlight our specialties and our very existence to some who are completely unaware of what their library can do for them.
