Threat to Herts Schools' Library Service - CILIP East of England

You may be interested to know that the Hertfordshire Local and Libraries Cabinet Panel will be meeting this afternoon [7th December 2011] to discuss the future of the Schools’ Library Service. The discussion will be based around a report written by Andrew Bignell, (Head of Libraries, Culture and Learning) and Michele Murphy, (Principal Librarian: Customers & Communities) which reveals the financial position of the SLS and recommends that the service be closed at the end of March 2012.

A highlight of 2011: The most exciting intellectual moment of 2011 for me was learning that People’s Libraries were at the heart of the various Occupy movement camps. The idea that knowledge and culture should be freely-available and widely-shared amongst those who want access to them is incredibly appealing. The spontaneous creation of these libraries against a backdrop of public library closures is a sign of hope. The destruction of nearly 3,000 books in the Zuccotti Park raid only reinforced the power of this idea.

Canadian libraries thriving in ebook era

Canadian libraries thriving in ebook era | Libraries around the world | Scoop.it

Across the country, library usage is up 45 per cent over the past decade, from 16.6 to 24.1 transactions on average per capita, according to a recent report prepared by Lumos Research for the Canadian Urban Libraries Council.

 

Much of that growth has been driven by digital information.

 

The use of electronic databases more than doubled, and Internet visits to library websites and catalogues grew five-fold in the period, according to the report.
