Literacy and digital storytelling | Library | National Adult Literacy Database

Literacy and digital storytelling | Library | National Adult Literacy Database | Libraries and literacy | Scoop.it

This brief video describes a workshop that helped a group of literacy instructors, tutors, and students learn to create digital stories.

The narrator explains that she was worried at first about whether it was possible to make the process of digital storytelling accessible to literacy learners, many of whom were dealing with multiple barriers to learning or with disabilities. The simplicity of the storytelling software put her fears to rest.

Workshop participants prepared digital stories that shared their own experiences of family life, personal development, and travel. The emphasis was on telling a story, in their own words.

Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information-Literacy Skills

Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information-Literacy Skills | Libraries and literacy | Scoop.it

The first step we took in 1999 was to stop teaching isolated library skills classes. We began reinforcing information-literacy skills through class projects. At that time, we employed traditional strategies, including paper pathfinders and guided lab sessions.

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice | Libraries and literacy | Scoop.it

Ibrar Bhatt writes: "Digital curation therefore is not just about finding relevant material, although that is a significant part of it, but is also about creating a specific and unique experience by utilising the resulting materials which then become contextualised within a new space. A curator, therefore, whether she is a journalist-by-proxy such as Popova or a student completing an assignment in a classroom, not only collects and interprets, but also creates a new experience with it. In this respect, curation is a process of problem solving, re-assembling,re-creating, and stewardship of other people’s writing."

This would create an interesting twist or option to the practice of assigning an essay as completion of a unit or topic of study.

Building a library for Information & Digital Literacy Skills | Jorum Team Blog | jorum.ac.uk | Libraries and literacy | Scoop.it

It was obvious from feedback received from the Jorum community that the existing classifications for Further and Higher Education, based on LearnDirect and JACS respectively, were not a good fit for Information Literacy (IL) Skills. Until now, the only suitable home for these resources has been in the Education collection, but this is both incorrect and diminishes their discoverability. In the early stages of creating the RDM collection, it became obvious that something similar was needed for these resources too.
