open learning spaces: What place the library?

open learning spaces: What place the library? | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it

Think more about the library as a service, having a teacher-librarian who can act as a filter, a connection maker, an information expert for learners. Someone who can support inquiry learning through the development of information literacy competencies in addition to the development of children as readers.

ERIAL Project

ERIAL Project | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it

The Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries (ERIAL) Project is a two-year study of the student research process. The project is funded by an LSTA grant awarded to Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) by the Illinois State Library. The goal of the project is to understand how students do research, and how relationships between students, teaching faculty and librarians shape that process. ERIAL is also an applied study—that is, research pursued with the purpose of uncovering, understanding and addressing social problems. As such, its goal is to use the results to develop more user-centered library services.

Stephen Harris: “Redesigning spaces around collaborative teaching” | WISE - World Innovation Summit for Education

Stephen Harris: “Redesigning spaces around collaborative teaching” | WISE - World Innovation Summit for Education | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it

"Our experience has been that change comes from these key elements:Redesign spaces around collaborative teaching,Retrain teachers to work collaboratively andEmpower and resource teachers to be the agents of change in any context

As a result the learning experience changes rapidly – leading to improved academic outcomes, greater alignment with the skills that will be valuable in post-school contexts and a far more obvious and positive culture of engaged learning will be evident.

We have learnt that space is both a fixed and fluid notion. It has an enormous impact on how we feel and think – the very core of our experiences of life. The challenge for schools is to identify the different spaces it inhabits – virtual, pedagogic and real, and to draw these together in meaningful ways so that learning can focus forward, enabled through technology."

Many libraries are working hard to mandate change in practice of staff, and to adapt existing spaces for new uses - we can learn much from the experiences of educators engaging in the same conversation, if in a different context.  Worth reading.  DW

Boring school libraries? Not any more - The National

Boring school libraries? Not any more - The National | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it

A new vision for school libraries in Abu Dhabi is reported in the national newspaper of the United Arab Emirates:

"The 'least-visited facilities' in Abu Dhabi's government schools are being converted into Learning Resource Centres, where children will go for classes, activities and research. Each centre will be stocked with more than 3,000 English and Arabic books, magazines and newspapers.

They will be made more spacious with comfortable furniture and will include a role-playing area, reading corners, multimedia access, TV and an online catalogue.

The makeover, to be complete in three years, is part of Abu Dhabi Education Council's solution to children's diminishing interest in reading."

Internet adoption over time | Pew Internet & American Life Project

Internet adoption over time | Pew Internet & American Life Project | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it
Ultimately, neither race nor gender are themselves part of the story of digital differences in its current form. Instead, age (being 65 or older), a lack of a high school education, and having a low household income (less than $20,000 per year) are the strongest negative predictors for internet use.

How do we address the inequity of access to information suggested by this data? Libraries, (public and school )- now more than ever need to provide excellent access for users. Internet adoption over time | Pew Internet & American Life Project...

Libraries Still an Important Discovery Source for Kids’ Books, Says Study — The Digital Shift

Libraries Still an Important Discovery Source for Kids’ Books, Says Study — The Digital Shift | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it

"Bowker survey also finds ebooks are growing in favor among teens, but with barriers to adoption.

When it comes to finding out about good books for children and teens, there’s more to it than Amazon.com. “Bookstores and libraries are still very important in discovery,” says Kelly Gallagher, VP of Publishing Services at RR Bowker, who presented key findings from the survey “Understanding the Children’s Book Consumer in the Digital Age” at last month’s Digital Book World.

Conducted by Bowker Market Research, the survey of 2,000 parents of kids ages 0–12 and 1,000 teens ages 13–17 also revealed some interesting stats regarding ebooks. While most parents (75 percent) have not yet bought an ebook, the rate for teens reading digital titles tripled from 2010 to 2011. Additionally, the survey underscored a potential discrepancy in what parents report about kids’ desire for print over digital books versus children’s actual preferences.
