Internet adoption over time | Pew Internet & American Life Project | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it
Ultimately, neither race nor gender are themselves part of the story of digital differences in its current form. Instead, age (being 65 or older), a lack of a high school education, and having a low household income (less than $20,000 per year) are the strongest negative predictors for internet use.

How do we address the inequity of access to information suggested by this data? Libraries, (public and school )- now more than ever need to provide excellent access for users. Internet adoption over time | Pew Internet & American Life Project...

Libraries now need to offer more than books to stay relevant. Inspired by Scandinavian models, they are turning into lively meeting points and cultural hot spots. Makerspaces reflect the values of the sharing economy.

At a Tipping Point: Education, Learning and Libraries

At a Tipping Point: Education, Learning and Libraries | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it

Th A new future is coming to education. Online shopping, searching and social networks came first—education is next. OCLC's newest user perceptions study, At a Tipping Point: Education, Learning and Libraries, explores how empowered consumers, fueled by economic incentives, are using online learning platforms and MOOCs to set new expectations for education—and for libraries. The report explores the behaviors, perceptions and motivations of online learners: how they are evaluating the cost/value trade-offs of higher education, how they are using and succeeding with online education—and their use and perceptions of the library.

"The Library is books .... And a place to get work done."

Libraries: Far from dead

Libraries: Far from dead | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it
As the internet unfolded and grew to just under five billion pages, there have been many reports of the death of Gutenberg things: books, newspapers and libraries, to name a few, and all of those reports exaggerated.
L2_S2S's insight:

"One of the interesting aspects of this project has been the extent to which libraries acknowledge the involvement of people, and the need to accommodate them,.  The internet and social media are obviously powerful tools, but they don't fulfil all of our intellectual needs."

21st-Century Libraries: The Learning Commons

21st-Century Libraries: The Learning Commons | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it
Libraries become a different kind of learning destination when schools reimagine them as open, transparent spaces that invite student communication and collaboration.
L2_S2S's insight:

Students and teachers no longer need a library simply for access. Instead, they require a place that encourages participatory learning and allows for co-construction of understanding from a variety of sources. In other words, instead of being an archive, libraries are becoming a learning commons.

Looking at the school library as a third place for students, parents, and faculty

Looking at the school library as a third place for students, parents, and faculty | School libraries and learning | Scoop.it
The big question is "how can a school library be a third-place when it is also part of the second place?"
L2_S2S's insight:

The first place is your home and the second place is your work or school.  And then there is that third-place, that place where you “hang out” with friends, collaborate with colleagues, it is a place to go and meet for quiet discussion, or friendly debate. How can your school library be the third space?
