Supporting E-learning: A Guide for Library and Information Managers

E-learning is becoming more common in academic institutions as a delivery mechanism for information content. However, successfully deploying e-learning technologies requires cooperation and exchange among professors, educational coordinators, systems librarians, education librarians, and information technology professionals. Increasingly librarians and information managers are directly involved in developing e-content and delivering services to support e-learning. It is vital that information managers appreciate the realities of e-learning and, more importantly, exploit its full potential as an information literacy platform. The contributors of this volume help readers understand how e-learning theory can be translated into practice.

This book will be useful for all managers of library and information services, as well as for any librarians involved in establishing policies for implementing and managing e-learning services. It will also be valuable for new professionals and as a text for advanced library and information science students.

It's Here! The NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Library Edition | The New Media Consortium | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it

The report describes findings from the NMC Horizon Project, an ongoing research project designed to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry. Six key trends, six significant challenges, and six emerging technologies are identified across three adoption horizons over the next one to five years, giving library leaders and staff a valuable guide for strategic technology planning. The format of the report was designed to provide these leaders with more in-depth insight into how the trends and challenges are accelerating and impeding the adoption of technology, along with their implications for policy, leadership, and practice.

Making It Real: 3D Printing as a Library Service (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it

The New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) have repeatedly identified 3D printing as an important development in educational technology, most recently forecasting a mere two to three years before widespread adoption.1 What will that mean for higher education and society? How will such services impact practices of higher education and potentially learning itself? What can those tasked with provisioning such services expect and plan for?

"Justin Ellis’s official title at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s library is instructional-technology associate, but he thinks of himself as the gadget guy. He manages a program at the library that lets students and professors check out a growing catalog of computers, cameras, and other electronics—a selection more akin to a Best Buy store than a lending library."

In 2012, I wrote about the San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Library & Information Science’s (SLIS) evaluation of its core courses. We’re currently putting the finishing touches on a reimagined LIBR 200 class called “Information Communities.” While colleagues reworked other core courses, I’ve partnered with Debra Hansen, one of our senior faculty and a library historian, to create an evolving, modern course that presents students with our foundations as well as an overview of information users and the social, cultural, economic, technological, and political forces that shape their information access.

Libraries as Enablers of Pedagogical and Curricular Change (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it

Dramatic changes have taken place in academic libraries over the past decade or so. Many libraries have renovated — or are planning to renovate — their space to create information or learning commons, incorporating technologies and collaborative spaces for students into spaces previously dedicated to print volumes and furniture for individual, quiet study. Some learning commons incorporate services run by other campus units, such as a writing or tutoring center, academic advising, or technology help desk — usually as a way to give students convenient, centralized, and holistic access to services, but also (and perhaps more importantly) to support student success. Other renovated spaces include classrooms dedicated to information literacy instruction, while an increasing number of academic libraries are designing classrooms appropriate for problem-based learning (that is, the "flipped classroom" model) into their renovated facilities.

Melissa Terras expresses her frustration at the current state of play of delivering digitised content online, for people who want to take digitised content, and reuse, and repurpose it. "I'm left wondering why more use isn't made of online digital collections - and why we havent seen the "maker's revolution" where everyone is walking around going "this old thing? I cobbled it together from public domain images on wikimedia and had a tailor on Etsy run it up for me!" - or even see more commercial companies start to use this content as the basis for their home and fashion collections on the high street."

With a significant focus on the development of makerspaces in libraries, Common Libraries "believe there is an urgent and pressing need to evolve libraries so that they may serve as bastions of a 21stcentury knowledge commons – functioning as trusted and impartial platforms for the production, exchange and consumption of knowledge and know-how – in both tangible locations and virtual spaces."
