How Libraries Fit in the Future of Learning

How Libraries Fit in the Future of Learning | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it
As part of this growing trend, school libraries are stepping up to the plate to offer students unprecedented access to tools and technology. Across districts, resources include everything from the parts and equipment necessary to build electrical circuits to the hardware and software that would enable students to print their own 3D prototypes. Some makerspaces even include traditional woodworking and crafting tools.

While the value of time spent tinkering may not be immediately apparent to some, makerspace proponents say hands-on work helps students hone their critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities, all while encouraging them to collaborate with peers. With those competencies in their toolkit, students can more easily navigate the STEM education network and, eventually, the workplace.

The New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) have repeatedly identified 3D printing as an important development in educational technology, most recently forecasting a mere two to three years before widespread adoption.1 What will that mean for higher education and society? How will such services impact practices of higher education and potentially learning itself? What can those tasked with provisioning such services expect and plan for?

As e-learning support is extended from higher education to schools, colleges and other learning organizations, a good understanding of copyright and other IPR issues is essential to ensure that material is legal and not laying the institution open to risk. Copyright is frequently seen as a barrier to making materials available in e-learning environments.

Libraries as Enablers of Pedagogical and Curricular Change (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu

Libraries as Enablers of Pedagogical and Curricular Change (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it

Dramatic changes have taken place in academic libraries over the past decade or so. Many libraries have renovated — or are planning to renovate — their space to create information or learning commons, incorporating technologies and collaborative spaces for students into spaces previously dedicated to print volumes and furniture for individual, quiet study. Some learning commons incorporate services run by other campus units, such as a writing or tutoring center, academic advising, or technology help desk — usually as a way to give students convenient, centralized, and holistic access to services, but also (and perhaps more importantly) to support student success. Other renovated spaces include classrooms dedicated to information literacy instruction, while an increasing number of academic libraries are designing classrooms appropriate for problem-based learning (that is, the "flipped classroom" model) into their renovated facilities.
