Is All This Student Data Changing the Way Teachers Teach?

Is All This Student Data Changing the Way Teachers Teach? | Libraries and education futures | Scoop.it
With so much access to student data these days, teachers are experimenting with different tactics, and figuring out what's working and what's not. As with most scenarios using education technology, it's a mixed bag. How it's used depends on a variety of factors in each school and in each teacher’s classroom. Some teachers are embracing student data to inform their teaching, while others believe there's a risk of an over-reliance on hard numbers that doesn’t take into account the human factor.

A new future is coming to education. Online shopping, searching and social networks came first—education is next. OCLC's newest user perceptions study, At a Tipping Point: Education, Learning and Libraries, explores how empowered consumers, fueled by economic incentives, are using online learning platforms and MOOCs to set new expectations for education—and for libraries. The report explores the behaviors, perceptions and motivations of online learners: how they are evaluating the cost/value trade-offs of higher education, how they are using and succeeding with online education—and their use and perceptions of the library.

Schools as Factories: Metaphors That Stick

Schools as Factories: Metaphors That Stick | Libraries and education futures | Scoop.it

You have seen images like these time and again:                               The idea of the school as an efficient factory assembly line has a long but surprising history. A century ago, the notion of schools delivering finished products to a democratic society was both new and admired. Here is what Professor Ellwood P. Cubberley, of Stanford University said in the early 20th century:

Our schools are, in a sense, factories, in which the raw products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned into products to meet the various demands of life. The specifications for manufacturing come from the demands of twentieth-century civilization, and it is the business of the school to build its pupils according to the specifications laid down.

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | Libraries and education futures | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.
