Who says libraries are dying? They are evolving into spaces for innovation | Librarianship | Scoop.it
Traditionally, libraries provided a quiet space to read. Today's libraries are taking on new roles and helping young people gain 21st-century skills.

Teachers as Learners: 6 Great Professional Development Ideas | Edudemic

Teachers as Learners: 6 Great Professional Development Ideas | Edudemic | Librarianship | Scoop.it
Most teachers consider themselves life-long learners. As professionals, teachers are required to complete a certain amount of professional development (PD) every few years to keep their certification current. Usually this PD looks like speakers coming to teacher’s meetings, or educators attending conferences or taking courses at a local college. While these opportunities are ways to advance their craft, many teachers find that they don’t get much as they should from sitting in meetings or classes.

Texas teachers.  This is a great resource for those of you piloting T-TESS, the new Texas teacher appraisal system.  You will have a form similar to the Teacher Self Report.  You will be setting goals and setting up plans for your professional development.  This list may give you ideas to include in planning your self improvement as a teacher.

PD are definately beneficial to teachers and educators.  PD days are pretty informative as they create new ways to inform teachers with current reform and change in the field of education.  It will be awesome to invent new ways to incorporate other forms of administering PD to teachers.

Why do schools need libraries? We have technology! (with images, tweets) · cookie03

"School librarians can increase the relevance of their libraries by integrating the use of Web 2.0 tools into their practice" (Creighton, 2012, p.57) but it has also been noted that some school communities are removing their libraries and qualified staff (O'Connell, 2014).

There seems to be lots of room for libraries and librarians to interject their skill sets with these 7 shifts, especially in the areas of digital literacy, research literacy, physical-to-digital, connectivism... My biggest takeaway, though, is the idea that none of these ideas require a huge influx of funding - they can all be done tomorrow with concerted effort in the education community.

While primarily geared towards the public libraries, the idea of nostalgia being a "thin reed" for librarians to cling to when advocating the importance of libraries is appropriate for the school library, too.

Doesn't matter which country you come from the findings are the same. School libraries are essential in the development of literacy capabilities for every student.

Sudi Hope Stodola's curator insight, March 12, 2014 10:37 AM

Best quote from the article: Novelist James Robertson, meanwhile, said that libraries were “as essential a part of school as a classroom”. He added: “You can’t just fill an empty room with books and call it a library – you need somebody to encourage children and show them how to use it.”

That's what we do.

Looking for some (mostly) cheap and (mostly) easy DIY for cozy reading spaces? Here are some wonderful ideas that you could put up in your classroom or library to encourage cuddling up with a good book! #2 is a great way to use shelves that are no longer needed because you've replaced some of your print with digital!

Amber Thibodeau's curator insight, September 14, 2015 9:05 AM

I feel this is useful in making an area that is invited and would make students want to read. Reading has always been important, and that fact has not changed. Literacy is key to being able to survive in life, from knowing whether food contains ingredients that can cause you to have an allergic reaction to knowing when and how often to take medications.
