Ixquick Search Engine

Ixquick Search Engine | Librarians Teaching Information Literacy | Scoop.it
A global metasearch engine with special features:Ixquick Protects Your Privacy!

Ixquick does NOT collect or share ANY personal information!
Nada. Zilch. Nothing.
Read more on our privacy position or go directly to Ixquick's Privacy Policy.

Ixquick is the world's most powerful search engine employing the most advanced metasearch technology.

Ixquick search results are more comprehensive and more accurate than other search engines. Ixquick's unique capabilities include an Advanced Search, a global search and power refinement.

Find phone numbers and addresses worldwide with Ixquick's International Phone Directory, or search through 18 million hours of video fun with Ixquick's Video search.

More comprehensive search resultsWhen you search with Ixquick search engine, you are searching many popular search engines simultaneously and anonymously. Combined, these engines cover more of the Internet than any one search engine alone.

More accurate search resultsAn Ixquick result is awarded one star () for every search engine that chooses it as one of the ten best results for your search. So a five star () result means that five search engines agreed on the result.

This is significant because search engines choose results in different ways, and each approach works well in some cases and poorly in others. A result with many stars was chosen for many different reasons, and is a consensus choice of many search engines.

Also, while irrelevant Web pages can be "optimized" to fool a single search engine's algorithm, it is much harder for a page to fool all the search engines.

CCPS Research Process

This website, developed by media specialists in Collier County, Florida, is an elegant solution to presenting the research process to students. The six step model for secondary students contains a rich set of links to resources for every step of the model. You could use this website for whole group instruction and then students could access it on their own as they work their way through a research assignment. A link to primary source lesson plans at the Library of Congress makes an instant resource to build research experiences for your students.

Rubric Assessment of Information Literacy Skills - RAILS

RAILS helps librarians assess student information literacy skills exhibited in "artifacts of student learning" like research papers, presentations, worksheets, portfolios, or reflective journals. Using the AAC&U VALUE rubrics and the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as starting points, RAILS assists librarians who seek to create campus-specific rubrics, "norm" them for use with multiple raters, and gather results data that inform instructional improvements.

Christine Bushong's insight:

Although this is for assessing higher education information literacy skills, it might be helpful when reinforcing the importance of information literacy to students and teachers.

Cooperative Library Instruction Project

Cooperative Library Instruction Project | Librarians Teaching Information Literacy | Scoop.it

The Cooperative Library Instruction Project (CLIP) is a partnership between Chemeketa Community College, Lane Community College, Oregon State University, Western Oregon University and Willamette University whose mission is to design and develop  sharable, web-based tutorials to assist in library instruction and  information literacy.

CLIP is creating tutorials that specifically address the larger ideas of information literacy. The collection might look something like an interactive, online information literacy "text book" from which librarians or instructors anywhere can select and use pieces as they choose.
