EAC agrees on grain standards

East African Community members have agreed on new standards for grain which are expected to ease trade within the bloc and the overlapping Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa).

Standard Digital News - Farmers advised against drying maize in the open

Standard Digital News - Farmers advised against drying maize in the open | Local Grain News | Scoop.it

Every year after harvest, most farmers in Uasin Gishu dry their produce in the open fields along roads and the railway line before taking it to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and millers.

The practice, which takes place outside Kipchoge Keino Stadium along the Eldoret-Iten road and at Uasin Gishu County’s Old Cemetery grounds, poses health risks to consumers as the produce gets in contact with a lot of dust.

The people drying the maize walk barefoot over the maize, possibly contaminating the produce further.

Ironically, this hazardous habit still continues even after the county administration introduced two driers to help the farmers dry their produce efficiently and hygienically.

Grain Warehouse Projects Stall for Lack of Cash – Dial 254 - Kenyan News Online | Local Grain News | Scoop.it

Construction of 15 grain storage facilities in areas prone to aflatoxin countrywide has stalled due to lack of funds, the Kareke Mbiuki the vice chairman of parliamentary committee on agriculture has said.

Mbiuki said construction of the facilities was to be funded by the national government but some money was not released after devolution to county governments.

Mr Mbiuki noted that the government shifted the burden to the county governments after the construction had started.

He said the facilities were to be built on a pilot basis to save the country of thousands of tonnes of grain that go to waste due to poor post-harvest handling.

Kenya's cereal farmers seek to cut post-harvest losses - WORLD - Globaltimes.cn

Kenya's cereal farmers seek to cut post-harvest losses - WORLD - Globaltimes.cn | Local Grain News | Scoop.it

Large percentage of cereals and grains harvested in the Sub-Saharan Africa is lost due to pest attack and rotting as a result of the poor post-harvest management practices.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says that one out of every five kilograms of grain produced in Sub-Saharan Africa is lost to pests and decay.

This therefore threatens food security in the respective countries even as they strive towards achieving food sustainable levels to feed their growing populations.

For instance, for 12 months, FAO asserts that the lost food can be used to feed a population of 48 million people.

In Kenya, farmers have started to mechanize the use of the mobile metal silos which can be used by the cereal or the grain growers as well as the produce traders.

10,000 farmers sign storage deal to cut out middlemen

10,000 farmers sign storage deal to cut out middlemen | Local Grain News | Scoop.it

More than 10,000 grain farmers have joined the warehouse receipting system in a bid to cut out middlemen who profit unfairly by buying produce at rock-bottom prices during the harvest season and selling at exorbitant prices in deficit areas.

The East Africa Grain Council (EAGC) said thousands of farmers have embraced its storage system since 2008 when it was first introduced.

The farmers, EAGC said, have benefited from higher prices for their produce than they used to before the warehousing system when they would sell their harvest cheaply or at a loss for lack of proper storage facilities.
